As I've sold quite a bit of my Fantasy army, someone pointed me out that Specialist Games exist, which seems to be with less models to painted and possible to be played in a shorter time. I've found their site on the internet, but fairly few people here play it so I have no idea what games are easy to pick up... Does anyone have some experience with them? |

*points at vinz/rattiq* Specialist games are good, especially the ones that can be played with the same minis as the mainsream systems [size0][e.g-mordheim is played with fantasy minis], so mainstream players can dive in without having to buy another set of models. I'm interested in mordheim, necromunda and inquisitor, having read the rulebooks [size0][which are free, another bonus] , but I haven't played any of them yet [size0][closest being a mordheim-style skirmish game]. Generally the specialist games are good fun, because of the increased detail, and stronger RPG element, as well as the higher degree of freedom for game types and random ocurrences. [size0]A good example of this being an inquisitorial henchman getting hit by an eviscerator, in the groin. [eviscerators being two-handed chainswords that can 'open' tanks]My advice would be to have a go at it. Round up some individuals and think up a good game to play, the more entertaining and random it is, the better.

Bloodbowl is more fun than Warhammer, and I love Mordheim. Unfortuently, the only person I can play (shiva) hates Mordheim..... |

*laughs*... That just made my day. I started with Bloodbowl some five years ago, though discarded it after a while (yes I know, shame on me) due to a lack of interested opponents. Yet, when around 2003 Games Workshop created the Bloodbowl Ressurection tournament and soon after the NAF organization came to life, my interest (and luckily that of my mates too) started to grow and for about five months we had a decent league, with my Skaven doing not too bad. Unfortunately, college came along and almost all of those regular opponents scattered through the Netherlands... While I did play some games from time to time, it wouldn't be until the Dutch Open tournament in February 2005 that I'd actively dive into the game again. First year I've used Dwarves with moderate results and in 2006 I stepped back towards my one true love, the Skaven. It has been a bit of a love/hate relationship between the two of us though, as my results were a long way from decent. (Just ask any of the master moulders that have seen my tournament reports at UE.net). Though, I hope to have a squad of goblins painted before February, as during my last tournament I completely fell in love with the team after having played against them at the BUBBLE tournament in Utrecht during September. Okay, so I won with 7-0 and did 6-1 in casualties, but that team has secret weapons, which IMO is the most fun aspect of bloodbowl. (You'll never be able to dodge a steel ball flung towards your head). The best thing I find about bloodbowl is that you'll be painting approximately twenty models at most (though with the goblins I'll have a headcoach, an assistant coach, a cheerleader, three fans, a turn counter, a score counter, a re-roll counter, a goblin referee, two trolls, ten goblins, a fanatic, a chain-saw wielding goblin, a bomb-throwing goblin and a ninja-gnoblar who will act as the pogoer, which brings the amount of models towards the twentysix models). There is nothing more you'll need to paint, which means the cost to start those games is relatively lower then for example Warhammer Fantasy. Mordheim is a game that has an awful amount of character. While it looks like a more detailed version of Warhammer Skirmish, your characters will gain skills/ injuries during a campaign and eventually end up to gain a background for themselves due to their actions during that campaign... The major upside with this game is that the step from Warhammer Fantasy into Mordheim is very low, as Mordheim is based upon the system of WH Fantasy. Aside from that, there are a lot of 'experimental' warbands, which means where Games Workshop cuts down the amount of armies to be used in WH Fantasy, Mordheim will still have those (in warband style then) and much, much more! I've been playing this game quite long as well and find it to be a splendid game! My assassin adept had a -1T injury after his first match and it took him over six matches, before he got his toughness back up to date. That was quite fun and his background now makes him a battle-hardened Eshin. All in all, this is really a fun game to do when you don't have enough time to do a WH Fantasy battle. Necromunda is (like Mordheim) a skirmish game, though this one is based upon the background of the planet Necromunda within the WH 40k setting. While fairly easy to pick up, the rules have a bigger resemblence with the second edition of WH 40k, then with the third or fourth. This is due to the short/long ranges still being listed per weapon and many of the weapons being fairly similar to what's listed in the old second edition Codex Wargear (which I happen to have in my possession)... I don't play this as much as I'd like to do, but I hope to pick this up again once I move towards my own appartment in a big city like The Hague/ Utrecht. (With my paper being app. fourty percent done, this might happen quite soon). GorkaMorka is almost the same as Necromunda, though being based upon the planet Angelis something and having only Orks fighting one another. Almost every model is mounted on a buggy, wartrakk, or any other vehicle you see the orks racing around with in 40k. I use Rebel Grots in this game and have an absolute blast!... In my opinion, it's a bit better then Necromunda, due to the higher amount of action taking place. You'll have to take the manoeuvres of your opponent into account, but will have to react fast once a buggy spins and you almost ride straight into it. Quite fun, hope to be able to play it a bit more. Man 'o War is a sea-based game and as with GorkaMorka one of those that is out of production. Luckily I have all the rulebooks and hope to get myself a fleet (or scratch-built one). The rules I still have to go through and it's really a hard game to get into, but from what I've heard it's immensely fun to do. A bit like with Warmaster, it's based on large-scale action on sea and has more to do with thinking smart, then actually creating a uberkilling combo with characters. I seriously hope I can start this one soon! Inquisitor I haven't done, usually to the fact that RPGing is not really my thing... Same goes for Warmaster and Epic, though I'm tempted to do Epic due to the massive models they have. And off course the fact that Forgeworld is going to get the game Aeronauticus Imperialis released somewhere in the future, which makes use of the Epic-scale flyers. Those are just such cool models! Anything else I can come up with? Nope... Happy reading guys.

If Man 'O War and GorkaMorka are out of production, that means GW can no longer profit from them and their intellectual property doesn't matter, right? I mean, they have N64 emulaters for the same reason. So, the rules for those games are legal to post online, as far as I know. :ph43r:

you're on your own for that one mork.... I love both mordheim and bloodbowl. Unfortunately, the only person who plays mordheim in my club now is annoying as hell, and the staff randomly decied to sell the remainding mordheim terrain, and stop keeping the bloodbowl board there because they take up too much space (because they are too bloody messyw ith all their crap), so they both died. I'm not bitter, no.... |

@Kill-Kill: I've checked it today and Games Workshop has published over a hundred and fourty games since they started. Much of those have been produced as small games between 1980 and 2000, after which just so much were taken out of production and became "cult products". If you'd look for a full Warhammer Quest box, the amount you might need to pay for it on eBay runs in the hundreds of dollars!... Still, the games remain property of Games Workshop and as its their intellectual property, publishing the rules of those games online might get you into a lot of trouble! Trust me, I've seen sites being taken down for publishing Gorkamorka rules. @Morkskittar: Oh trust me, not all of them are published online... Games like Gorkamorka, Man o' War, Battle of Armageddon (and its expansion Chaos Attack) and off course Gobbos' Banquet have all been out of production for quite a few years now, though these rules are far from being published online. Though, it does seem Andy Hall (Fanatic guru) has some plans with publishing Gorkamorka in some Necromunda expansion. I'll try to look up something for those counters and templates for you. Might have some link in my archive. |

Hey VP, then you really ought to try out Necromunda... While Mordheim is fun to play, IMO Necromunda is a little better. As they don't have a fixed amount of experience and a much higher max. XP level. Aside from that, you seriously don't want to walk into someone that's carrying a massive plasma cannon! *evil grin*... |
