Black Death

Week 3 is under way. My total as of week 2 is 21 Journeyman points. I'm working on a Heavy jack now that should be painted by this weekend.

Due to the points increase, I only got 2 games in tonight.

First game was a rematch against the stealth Cryx Warcaster. I put up a much better fight this time around and had a hard fought loss. Overall though I've been using Ossyan MUCH more effectively. On Turn 2 I charged his unit of Blast-Immune Horn critical knockdown reach-weapons-that-damage-your-caster unit with my Battle Mittens. I used my arc node to fire an arcantrik bolt at the UA to cancel out their immune to blast and then cast Shatterstorm on the Mittens who promptly annihilated the entire unit. I couldn't get enough attacks in to deal with the Mechanithralls and the exploding, spraying (bane thralls I think?) got some REALLY lucky rolls to lay the smackdown on my jacks. His caster used her feat turn to stop me from Trampling my way to victory and I got finished off by an arc node that moved into my back arc *grumble*. A fun game overall though.

Second game was against eNemo. This one was fairly short and ended with a pretty easy victory. My Hydra was able to store an impressive 9 focus giving me 21" Range at 21 POW. Even sitting on 7 Focus, eNemo didn't stand a chance between that and my Hydra. Of not this match was yet another moment of Mittens glory. Using Ossyan's Quicken I was able to dash them across the board and knockdown/pull a Thunderhead character jack outside of eNemo's control area! I was a few inches shy of a charge on it but I took out an 11 or 12 point model right from Turn 1.

Oooooh, Satyxis Raiders with a Sea Witch ^_^ I was wondering what the immune to blast damage Cryx troops were

Sounds like you're having fun :) Denial 'casters are never easy to play against, and Deneghra's Feat is amazingly powerful and bloody annoying to go up against. Still, I like that you're getting the hang of Ossyan. Any plans to introduce a new Warcaster in the near future?

I actually have no plans at all for a new Warcaster anytime soon. I have purchased Ravyn and Vyros on top of Ossyan, but they're sitting on my shelf for now.

There's still alot more I want to learn and practice with Ossyan before I branch out to the other casters. Plus I feel like I need a lot more unit variability before I can start using multiple casters effectively.

I'm self-limiting myself by painting all of my units before purchasing new ones. As you can see by the painting log it's slowed up a bit. I'm trying to have both my heavy jacks finished by this weekend/next week.

Finished painting up my first Heavy Myrmidon. Really interested in hearing some feedback on it so I can improve on my next one that I'll be painting this weekend.

Some changes I've made over the Chimera:

- Lightened up the dirt and grime significantly. The Hydra is a more long range myrmidon and I wanted to reflect this.

- Power nodes are now painted as a mix of Chainmail and Space Wolves Grey. I'm pretty happy with how this turned out over the gloss varnished Shadow Grey.

- Replaced all of the dark grey bits (facemask, shoulder lining, and other minor details) to Space Wolves Grey instead. I feel like this gives the model a really sleek and clean look overall that reflects the faction as a whole. Since the armor plating is just about solid white, I wanted a less harsh contrast while still breaking up the monotony of it.

- Alot more subtle detail into the machinery behind the armor plates. I did a Boltgun Metal base with a Badab Black ink. Then a highlight with Chainmail. This effect was also applied to the hand bits.

I do like the monochrome colour scheme ^_^ Suits the Retribution stuff very well, and I think that's one of your better-painted models.

The splotches on the shoulder pads are interesting :) Look rather like scorch marks, which given that Retribution Myrmidon's have their power sources in their shoulder pads (I think, I remember reading that somewhere in Wrath  ) makes sense, I guess.

The arms have these weird exhaust vents coming out of the top of them.... they're pushed right up against the shoulder pads so that's a little bit of afterburn from holding in all that Focus!

Really good painting, except for the silver, that's a little flat. Highlight?

Quickitt are you talking about the silver bits underneath of the white armour plates? Or the silver orbs on his shoulderpads?

The silver orbs. It's just one layer of paint as it seems now and that doesn't suit the rather high level the rest is painted with.

Hmm I agree 100% but... Painting orbs is new to me... Not sure how to correct this? Would another dot of paint in a lighter colour suffice or am I going to have to do some other super fancy technique I don't know about?

Alternatively, maybe a coat of gloss varnish would be enough to give it some extra depth?

First boltgun metal, then the color you have now, then an even lighter color highlighted and then gloss varnish, I think.

Hmmm alright. I should have my Manticore finished at some point this weekend. I'll try the new technique on that mini. Thanks a lot for the input.
