Sorry for the long delay in posting. Rigging the links and all to work properly is quite annoying. Plus there's not too much to report. First up is another heavy Myrmidon, the Manticore. I've adjusted my colour scheme just a little bit to include Space Wolves Grey instead of a darker grey for highlighted areas. I've added some additional layers onto the node thingys to make them pop a little bit. Experimental techniques I'd like feedback on:
- Blood, gore and fur on the left arm.
- Eroded/scorched paint on the top bits. I was going for some sort of glancing blow that would have seared off the paint on the 'jack exposing the raw metal beneath.

Next up is another solo that's become a mainstay in all of my lists: Sylys Wyshnalyrr. Nothing too fancy on the paint job, kept it simple so I can keep up with my pledge of not buying new models until all of my current ones are painted.

Ah yes, Sylys Wyshnalyrr. A prime example of PP's policy to defy convention by choosing not to have any silly apostrophes in their elven names, but rather to simply make elven names unpronouncable by anyone with fewer than six tongues

I like the gore, for what it's worth, not too sure on the battle damage though. The scorch marks around it look kinda odd next to the plain metal underneath, and I find the shape of the damage a bit funny for a glancing blow (although with Retribution Power Shields, I can see that sort of thing happening). I can't really think of any way to make it better though. Maybe make the damage look more like something's been clawing at the machine (so no scorch marks and change the shape of the damage to be longer and thinner)? Could go well with the blood and fur ^_^

Competition has started heating up in my store. We've been doing more organized play (leagues/scenarios) and I've been becoming better at the game in general. I've decided that my current range of models is complete shit and I need to expand my collection in order to field more competitive lists. I've decided to curb my purchases by painting all of my existing minis before buying new ones. You all should be expecting lots of new images over the next few weeks, or until I fizzle out. I've got a backlog of photos as well, so here they are:

Phoenix up first and probably my favorite paint job on a jack to date. Some of the moulding was messed up, so that's where I applied battle damage. Refined the process used on the Manticore and made the areas a little smaller. Also pretty proud of how the blood spatter on the sword turned out.

The Griffon turned out clean. No battle damage on this one. Still pretty frustrated with the shallow grooves in the Ret models for the power lines. These are seen on the Shoulder plates most easily, but the little buggers are all over the models. I'm having lots of trouble keeping my whites white without gunking up the shallow grooves with too much paint. Suggestions here would be HIGHLY appreciated (both on painting white and on painting in the grooves)

The Mage Hunter Strike Force shown here sticks with the monochrome colour scheme of my army. Dark Angels Green as well as some metallic highlights break up the grey in my opinion. The simple palette helps tie these guys in with my giant white marshmallow jacks, and the dark grey is a stark contrast that fits in with the differences between Dawnguard and Mage Hunters (2 "clans" within Retribution)

I have ot say i like the mage-hunters the best, i'm not a fan of the bulky suits above however, dunno why, not really a painting issue, just... too much "open space" on them.as for power lines, only thing i would suggest is, paint the power lines first, then the white, then apply a light ink wash to the power-lines and "dab" it off abit with a peice of tissue to remove excess and stop it running all over your white, then, re-paint over the white again near the lines to remove an colour running from the wash. The ink might make it stand out more with it being glossy. I've not used ink myself yet, but i've seen it put to good use before, and tbh, i really need to get round to painting my Grey Knights. Need to spray the b******s first though and it's too damned cold to go outside and do it ^_^

Also need to invest in more paints <_<

Or steal some from someone... *cough* Guldan *cough* :ph43r:

Wow, you've been painting a lot, haven't you? I agree on the phoenix, it's probably your best model so far. The mage hunter strike force surprised me, because alone I don't think I liek them, but they're very nice in a group it seems.

Urgh, Mage Hunters <_< I mean, very nice models ^_^ Some great painting there, but Retribution is quickly becoming just as dreaded a match-up for me as Cygnar. I don't know what it is about shooting heavy armies, I just can't seem to get a handle on them :(

Anyway, as Quickitt said, the Phoenix is great and I really like how the Mage Hunters look as a unit. Just a quick aside to Silvermane though, it's a giant magic robot ;) Not a suit of any kind.

Aaah, righto, i thought they were some magic/steam powered huge-ass armoured suit with a guy in the middle of it all somewhere. Men-o'-war or something aren't they? That's probs what confused me... now if they'd said "Big Magical peice of metal with a sword 6 times the size of you-o'-war" then it would have explained it better... even if it is a little long ^_^

However, i have pinned down what i dislike about them... the shoulder plating. Waaay too big, they wouldn't be out of place in an 80's concert :P The actual "mechanics" part of them look quite good, with the engine exhaust vents and the knee and elbow joints etc Just the shoulder plates are waaaay to bulky, but, i'm sure i've read somewhere that the shoulders hold their power sources? So that's probs the fluff reason... still look pretty bad though ^_^

Wow guys, so glad there's still interest in this thread :D.

Silvermane, the solution you're suggestion won't really work because of the amount of layers needed to smooth out my whites. In order to get a streak-free solid white on the larger bits, the top coat of paint needs to be pretty thick. If I avoid the power lines, it won't blend well enough when I go back and try to carefully paint around them.

As for UR's woes against Ret, it sounds like you're only experiencing the tip of the iceberg. Retribution is the Scissors made of Rock. They are most devastating as a combined arms force. You may be struggling now, but if you're opponent knocked your army down with magic attacks, shot you up from behind a wall ignoring buffs, LoS, and cover/concealment, then charges whatever is left with Reach Weaponmasters.....

I've got a unit of Dawnguard that I painted last week, plus a solo and another Warcaster that I painted yesterday. I'll post those at some point tonight so that I'll be totally caught up.

Man-O-War are Khador heavy infantry, troops that essentially wear a Warjack as a suit of armour ;) The actual Warjacks are robots with magic brains ^_^

The Retribution players in my area are a funny pair. One of them focusses entirely on shooting with Ossyan leading, and the other almost entirely on melee with multiple heavies and led by Vyros. I seem to be able to win against the latter without too much of an issue, but the former is a big pain (it's bad enough that the Mage Hunters can see through my models, but it doesn't help that Sturm and Drang are so damned big every other infantry model in his army can see and shoot them too <_<

Seems like those Hogs be needing to cut down on the Swill there!
I know your list tends to consist of Hogs of War which are melee through and through aren't they? And then a few other Mercs, but, don't you have any way to combat ranged?

Not really the topic for this discussion, but put quickly:

The big problems I have with shooting stem from the combined arms nature of the Farrow armies. My army isn't all melee, not by a long shot, but our ranged weapons are mostly short range (with one exception, and it's a stationary artillery range with an effective operational range actually shorter than the average Brigand) and more designed to soften up an enemy in preparation for the melee as opposed to actually winning the game. This works great against melee armies, forcing them to come to me and effectively allowing me to fight battles on my terms, but it doesn't do so well against ranged armies where I'm consistently outranged and outgunned. Farrow aren't the speediest of creatures, their normal infantry are actually 1 Speed below the norm, and the War Hogs have the lowest Speed stat it's possible to get in the game. This puts me at a bit of a disadvantage, as you might imagine <_< To top it off, outside of Lord Carver, BMMD, Esq. III, the pigs largely lack speed buffs and effective ways to ward off shooting. I'm really hoping the next Warlock provides a few more tricks (Snipe and/or Occultation would be amazing ^_^ But I'll take any shooting buff or shooting defence I can get).

Now, winning is still possible, I just need to get better at the game. The boards at the club have plenty of cover, so I need to get used to taking greater advantage of that. Wouldn't help against some enemies, mind you... I'm also really liking Gudrun the Wanderer. Fun little solo that proved pretty effective in my last game against Ret at tying up the damned Mage Hunters :D

Nice minis. I agree about "too much open space" on the jacks for my liking, but you painted them well.

Regarding the power lines/grooves, have you tried micron pens? They get in tight spaces well and come in a variety of colours.
