Lord of Ponies
This is Lunara, and Iím presenting to you all from the Dome of Secrets. This specially-prepared arena is a massive tarp, as Iím sure you can see. Contestants will be released inside at the same time, but each from a different entrance, and they must then negotiate sets of obstacles to reach the centre. Now, letís turn our attention to the contestants.
The obstacle course:
The first contestant is Cyr the ermine. It seems that Cyr received a pair of wings, which he is now using to lift off of the starting position. The curtain is pulled back, and heís in! The obstacle hovers up above him, my dragon Illithian. Cyr is going to have to remain hidden if he wants to stand a chance. Luck seems to be on Cyrís side however, as he sticks to the shadows on the edge of the arena. His small size is a great aid, as Illithian fails to detect his presence. Diving into the tunnel leading further into the arena. He encounters a system of dart shooters, a pitfall and several hidden crossbows, but each time the ermineís agility saves him. Cyr is through!
Twilly the giant spider enters the arena, and immediately begins crawling along the side of the wall, as opposed to the floor. However, he is just about to walk onto a concealed spike, and -ouch, that looked like it hurt. Twilly wonít be making it through.
Arskittar (Alpha 1)
Alpha 1 the Skavenslave runs through the entrance, and immediately sprints down the corridor. Something clicks as he steps on a pressure plate, and a crossbow bolt buries itself in his eye. Alpha 1 falls.
Minus the massive sandworm burrows into the ground, heading straight for the centre of the arena. Now thatís not very stealthy, I do hope the beast is good at sensing heat differences. Oh, is that the smell of burning sandworm? I guess heíll be the first to warm up the magma river. Minus is out.
Scuttle the extra-limbed rat is next into the arena, and heís taking the direct approach. Running rapidly through the corridors, Scuttle has his ears raised, staying aware of his surroundings. A pressure plate clicks, but Scuttle has dived aside before the bolt could hit him. He grinds to a halt a moment before a pitfall opens, scuttling along an incline on the wall to circumvent the obstacle. Suddenly, the rat dives into a corner, barely hiding itself from view as an alligator trundles by. A few minutes later, Scuttle regains the courage to exit itís hiding hole, and scuttles onward to the centre of the arena.
Divebomber, a flying bat is up. Taking the same route as his predecessor Cyr, Divebomber flies straight up to the roof of the arena. Once again, Illithian is present, but like before the dragon takes no notice of the tiny interloper. Diving through a crack in the inner ceiling, Divebomber makes it into the corridors. He flies over a cloud of low-hanging gas, before ducking to the side to avoid a swarm of miniature fireballs. Three sharp turns later and he finds himself in the centre of the arena.
Rattapilla the multi-torso Skavenslave steps forward, electing to take the old-fashioned walk towards the centre. Unfortunately his bulk interferes with his reactions, and Rattapilla takes a tumble into the first pitfall trap. Heís out.
And now, the next contestant, Mr. Rusty Dart. Wait, what? The beast is only called Dart? Ok, who messed with the tele-prompter? Anyway, the little flying rat takes to the skies, using the same route as the two before him. This time Illithian actually notices the rat, and shoots a coil of wire at him, but Dart dodges out of the way. The dragon obviously thinks heís not worth pursuing, as it resumes his previous, lazy hover over the arena. getting into the corridor, the pit traps and alligator prove no resistance, and Dart quickly reaches the centre.
Scorchy walks confidently into the arena, emitting his burning aura. Unfortunately, glowing bright orange is not stealthy, and he quickly attracts Illithianís attention. He also lacks the dodging abilities of the previous contestants, and finds himself impaled by coil of wire larger than he is. Scorchy is out!
Jorry Potsie (Snotty)
Snotty, a small snotling takes to the field. He also flies, and succeeds in avoiding the dragon Illithian, who is still feeding on Scorchyís remains. Entering the corridor, Snotty seems confident that the hard part is over. He breaks into a runÖ right into the jaws of a waiting alligator. Snotty loses.
Quetzo the sand serpent flies into the arena, his skin blurring into the background while he hugs the ceiling closely. Illithian is totally unaware of him, and does not budge, while his flying bypasses the majority of the traps. His wing brushes a wall pressure plate, but Quetzo easily dodges the poisoned wind globes launched at him. It seems heís cleared the centre.
Chieftain Quickitt (Swickle)
Swickle the rat-wolf jumps into position, his long legs rapidly gaining distance. He bursts through the curtainÖ and finds Illithian standing right in front of him, a one-in-ten chance of emerging where he did. The dragon looks bemused as he incinerates Swickle with a gout of warpfire.
Boris the mole begins pawing at the earth, digging a tunnel towards the centre. A moment later I hear a faint sizzling, it seems that he has found the magma river that killed Minus.
Throbb the rat ogre takes to the field, a surprising lack of stealth enhancements on him. Running forward, he is quickly spotted by Illithian, who breathes a huge gout of warpfire at him. For some reason though Throbb is covered in water (Sandworm protection, my aide says), and brushes off most of the fire. Heís still sizzling slightly when he enters the corridor however, and triggers a dart gun. Several darts embed themselves into his torso, powerful sleeping agents doing their work. Throbb is down.
Shelob the giant spider slinks into the arena. Giant spiders are naturally rather stealthy, but this one is shuddering and foaming at the mouth, I wonder if heís been drugged up, or thereís just something wrong with him. Anyway, heís entered the arena, with Illithian facing the opposite direction. Strangely, Shelob does not simply crawl past, and instead jumps onto Illithian from behind! His fangs sink into Illithian, but the dragonís scales are impervious. A rotating wire cannon turns to face Shelob, and pulps the giant spider in one volley of fire.
Krozias enters the arena, ready to. Wait, what? A Kroxigor in a stealth contest? Alright thenÖ Krozias lumbers into the first chamber, attracting Illithianís attention almost immediately. The dragon breathes a gout of warpfire over Krozias, but the Kroxigor does not respond, plodding slowly onwards. Bored, Illithian turns away and goes back to his meal. Amazingly Krozias makes it as far as the main corridor, before tumbling down a pitfall.
Benny the man-thing enters the arena, cautiously stepping around Illithian. The dragon does notice him though, and a single blast of warpfire cooks the man-thing inside his armour.
Tufty the Rat-Wolf takes to the arena, the second of her kind to attempt the course. She narrowly evades the attention of Illithian, and makes it to the cloud of floor-hugging gas. Stepping back, Tufty sprints and jumps right over the gas! Unfortunately, her legs land in it, and the acidic substance starts eating them away. Tufty manages to crawl to the centre, but is obviously unable to fight. UhÖ Hold, on, Iím going to ask the judges something.
*Five minutes later*
Ok, after some discussion, Tufty is counted as having reached the centre for 75 tokens, but is withdrawn from the final contest.
Frank the bear lumbers to the arena, taking flight even as he enters Illithianís sight. The dragon seems to yawn, before his shoulder-mounted wire cannons fire a blistering salvo. Frank vanishes under the onslaught, turned into a thin red paste.
The final fight:
UnderTheEarth (Cyr) vs. Kormas (Scuttle) vs. Morkskittar (Divebomber) vs. Rusty (Dart) vs. Tapirus (Quetzo)
Alright, so we have the final fight, and there are two rats, an ermine, a batÖ and an ogre-sized giant snake. This isnít unfair at all. Divebomber the bat is the first to launch forwards, firing off some porcupine quills, and striking Quetzo the giant snake right in the eyes. The snake roars in agony, and thrashes wildly. Unfortunately his motions catch both Scuttle and Dart, both rats falling in a single blow. Recovering himself, Quetzo takes to the air, and swallows Divebomber whole!
Cyr the ermine panics, and tries to dig itís way to safety, but Quetzo is too quick, and makes it two for two swallows. Quetzo has won!
For being the last beast standing, Quetzo earns his moulder an additional 150 Tokens. Also of note is Divebomber, whose excellent performance in the final battle captivated the audience. His trainer, H.P. Morkraft receives a 50 Token ďfan favouriteĒ award. This concludes the Race in Shadows, the first, but definitely not last special event in the Outskirts.
Hell Pit, you stay classy!
