Thankee for the topic Morky Ok, so I've had requests from kormas, BD, and Morky on separate occasions to show them my terrible painting skills in all their horrible glory. Since I need a motivation to actually get the bulk of my Thornfall Alliance army painted (at the moment, most of my models are sitting at what I term the "half-arsed" standard, where I started to paint them assembly-line style, got about the four main colours onto each model, and then went off and did something else before I got around to details, highlights, what have you) I figured this would be a good way to do it. So, what I have for you today is the first model in my army that I've actually got around to finishing. Somewhat oddly, he was also the last model that I got around to buying. I figure he might actually be of interest to the non-Warmachine/Hordes players here, since he's the kind of disfigured abomination Moulders would love to get their hands on. Warning in advance. This is probably the best paint job I've ever done. However... that really isn't saying much, I'm not a great painter So, without further ado, here you have Sturm and Drang: ![]() ![]() ![]() Aaand bad lighting photo: ![]() For those interested, Sturm and Drang are an... interesting Warlock. Each turn you pick a head to have in charge for that turn. Sturm is pretty defensive with some upkeep spells that he likes to keep going, while Drang is full-on offensive with only two spells at his disposal but a few special rules and passive buffs for his Warbeasts to make up for it. I'm looking forward to the release of the Road Hog, as they're not exactly the fastest pair with only Telekinesis to buff the speed of their War Hogs. They're a lot of fun to use though, and I've pretty much shelved Lord Carver and Doctor Arkadius while I practice with them. Unsurprisingly, in the background Sturm is supposed to be a megalomaniac and Drang a brutal berserker, although Arkadius found that they were a tad too powerful when they got loose and trashed his lab. After that incident he gave Sturm a strong case of dementia and lowered Drang's intelligence to barely above that of an animal to keep them under control. It's a shame Domination doesn't have any fluff involving the pair, but hopefully a No Quarter will compensate for that shortly. [changed pics to thumbnails. - Glod] |

Neat mini. I don't know much about Warmachines or Hordes (Are they the same game?) but the painting is pretty good. It is neat (no slopping), but it could use some highlites. GW maskes some nice washes that you can just slop on a mini to add darkness to the recesses - in effect it is reverse highliting. It is as quick and easy as it sounds. For skaven most folks use Devlan Mud, which is a medium-darkish brown. I look forward to seeing more! |

To be fair, there's a bit of slopping around their faces (particularly Sturm's). And I know about washes, got a good amount of Devlan Mud and Ogryn Flesh that I've been using with my War Hogs. I just didn't get around to using them on this guy for some reason, but I appreciate the suggestion Keep it in mind for future models. To answer the question, Warmachine and Hordes are pretty much the same game. There are five Warmachine Factions and four Hordes Factions, plus Mercenaries (for Warmachine) and Minions (for Hordes). The difference isn't in the basic game rules, but rather in how the army leaders (Warcasters for Warmachines, Warlock for Hordes) and their Battlegroups work. As a result, the two systems are perfectly compatible, and thus can be used against one another without any problems (a good thing, since my brother plays Khador, a Warmachine faction, while my Thornfall Alliance are made up of a bunch of Minion units from Hordes). Ultimately, the difference is just that Warmachine factions use steampunk magic robots called Warjacks, while Hordes factins use giant monsters called Warbeasts. Anyway, I'm going to go and head to sleep shortly, and then tomorrow I've got a War Hog or two to get to work on. |

Alright, today I have the first of my three War Hogs. For those unfamiliar with Farrow/the game in general, the War Hog is the only Heavy Warbeast currently available for the Thornfall Alliance (although the Road Hog, a new Heavy, was in Domination, its model won't be released for a few more months at least). They were Doctor Arkadius's first major success when it came to modifying Farrow, enabling him to create these massive, cleaver-armed killing machines augmented with alchemical fluids and whole limbs replaced with parts scavenged from scrapped Warjacks. In-game, War Hogs are pretty brutal, capable of trashing most other Heavies in the game in a single turn, particularly with the help of Lord Carver or Doctor Arkadius, who both have ways to buff their damage output. Sturm and Drang don't really have that, but as a general rule my War Hogs have got on fine without it and Drang does have the Goad rule (can make them move 2" after killing an enemy model, good for clearing infantry) and Pack Hunter, which basically gives all his Warbeasts +2 Mat (makes them more accurate). So, here we have him: ![]() ![]() Sorry about the arm here. It fell off and when I stuck it back in it didn't seem to line up in the right spot. I've fixed it since the picture was taken, so you can't see any of the ugly unpainted metal anymore. ![]() ![]() ![]() And a picture of the War Hog alongside Sturm and Drang and one of my brother's Khadoran Mechaniks, to give a sense of the scale involved: ![]() War Hogs are big piggies

You could drybrush the mowhawk to improve the model. BTW, who else here agrees that the War Hog is way better than Sturm and Drang? UR seems to be under the fake impression that S&D was the best he could manage while the War Hog is already better. If you agree, and I'm sure you do, don't forget to place that opinion here, I need to prove UR wrong

Since no one seems to agree with you, I claim victory Speaking of victory, I've been enjoying a lot of success on the table top with Sturm and Drang. Two wins against a heavy armour Khador army led by Karchev, a win against a Vyros army, and a loss against a Cygnar force so far this week. They're proving remarkably effective against melee armies, Watcher, Vision, and the Feat serving to effectively nerf the opponent's Battlegroup, and I found in one game against my brother's Khador force that Telekinesis is amazing at pulling heavy infantry out of Shield Wall. They're particularly good against Vyros, as their Feat essentially cancels out his provided you use it first. They're a really nifty pair, my favourite out of the Thornfall Alliance Warlocks, with a lot of great movement tricks. |

loosk good, although i actually agree with quickett the big piggy loosk pretty good. yet again i would jsut say you need to apply some thick washed to the skin, i would recomend delven mud, then just blend your flesh colour in the raised ares and your skin would look good

Very nice, I like them. The only comment I'd make is the opposite to Kormas's You need to highlight the skin much lighter, just at the high points. I think it'd really bring the paint job out well. (it's a problem I have when painting, which is why I notice it )Otherwise, they look great. ![]() Now, Packlordy business... please either shrink the pictures or make them into thumbnails. They're huge. the "th_" creates an automatic thumbnail of the image. -Glod Also, I kinda want one of these to turn into a pig-rogre... I already have a cow. Edited by NPC, Dec 14 2011, 10:48 PM.
