Rules Refresher

Lacunae and Tirr both awoke slowly, taking several minutes to get used to their surroundings. Lacunae cursed the name of the Druchii - mentally, of course - for several minutes, while Tirr spent the time lamenting the cowardly nature of Skaven. On either side of the pair of them were Vilnutt and Ratchek, both still unconscious.

Tirr and Lacunae exchanged withering looks before inspecting their surroundings. They were in a small room of smooth black stone, with a slab of the same material before them, covered in what looked like dried blood and matted fur. They were both bound with something that felt oddly like hair, but was as strong as steel.

"Well, well, so they awaken..." a voice whispered from behind the pair of them. They both jumped, but a quick look around reveals no one else in the room.

"Well, two at least. Tell me then, what is it that you most fear?" The voice came from in front of them this time. They looked ahead, and then down, and found themselves staring into the face of a tiny snotling with a clipboard. "Got to know for the master's records," he said cheerily. "Got to know all of their nightmares, he tells me. So, what is your deepest, darkest fear?"

"For the master eh? So you would be a slave then? Oh, where are my manner-things? I am Tirr the Strange, you may have heard of me. As for my nightmares I'm afraid those are classified and property of WyrdTech labs. Your name might be?"
Tirr proffered his paw for a shake as he seemed unable to stop doing.

A snotling. The smallest subspecies of the Orcoid species, typically used as menial labour and a substitute food source. Finding an educated specimen is rare... Perhaps a collector of sorts? Or just someone with more tokens than sense? Well, I did hope to find opportunities by tagging along to this: it simply may not be what I had in mind...

"My fear is probably not uncommon." Lacunae decided to humour the thing for now, "It is the quintessential fear that my kind - who have existed for years beyond reckoning - may perish to the last within this city floating upon a sea of Chaos."

Tirr tried his best to politely offer his hand, but the ropes which bound them to the chair also bound his wrists together, and he was forced to offer instead just a smile.

The snotling nodded as Lacunae spoke, and scribbled on its clipboard. "Fear that elves... perish... to chaos." The Snotling squinted up at Lacunae. "Which elves? All elves? Are we including Asrai and Druchii as well? And what about the..." He flipped up the paper for a moment. "...Eldar? Them too? And all elves, or just the elves that believe what you do? Specifics are important, here, yes."

His eyes moved back to Tirr. "I am slave to none, Tirr, but assistant to the great... well, to the Great One. You can call me Snotz, if you'd like. Now, I'm afraid I can't let you go anywhere without you telling me your deepest fears... or will I have to wring it out of you?" The Snotling smiled pleasantly. "You do seem like such a nice rat..."

Lacunae smiled as the various denominations of elves were named: that even a snotling in this cursed realm still remembered their names, this brought nostalgic smile to her face.

"I was not alive during the times of unity." Lacunae narrated, choosing a line favoured in folktales. "Before the sundering of the shining isle, and the treachery of beards. But there were elders who taught me of those golden days. Together beneath the silver spires, our joint resonance conmingled all choirs. But that was not to last."

A bitter smile, tinged with barely-surpressed hatred.

"Five thousand years. That's how long our race was divided: before the end times made it all pointless. How painful that the only force strong enough to unify our remnants was the utter destruction of all we have ever known. Yet in spite of this, I genuinely wish them well. The Asur, the Asrai, even the Druchii, I would be so happy if we could all survive together; differing nationalities and beliefs be damned. But in reality, there will always be those who refuse to adapt; refuse to change to fit our new reality. They will falter, they will fall, and ultimately they will die. I will mourn their passing, but I am not so naive as to hope for such a happy ending."

As she spoke, Lacunae's eyes had glazed over; mind lost within the cascade of old memories. Yet at last her mind caught up, registering words not easily ignored, even in this stage of nostalgia.

"You speak to me, Snotz, of the Eldar? Of them, I am uncertain for my knowledge is limited. I hear that they are similar to us, in form, physiology and temperament. That they mastered the arcane and wove an empire spread across the stars. That their voices cry out in prayer to fallen Gods my own once venerated. That in the end, for all their power and glory: they too fell before Chaos and despair."

Lacunae bit her lip, nearly enough to draw blood. To admit that Chaos was so powerful as to threaten such an advanced civilisation: this realisation had rattled her more they she would ever admit to the living.

"Perhaps, Elves and Eldar are brothers and sisters in extinction, that in such dire times they might have insights to share, to assist in the transition to a new world. If that is true, then I would call them kin. I would fear for them, and pray for them too, that they might be accepted in Mutae's new order."

"So Snotz I'll answer your question if you answer mine. Who is this great one exactly? I'll keep my end of the bargain." Tirr smiled. "It's not like I'm going anywhere! I must admit you have me intrigued-interested. I did not think it a guild heavy who captured me, and this talk of a great one sounds religious. Yet I can name no sanctioned religion which staffs snotlings as you are staffed."

The snotling seemed to have lost interest in Lacunae. "Yes, yes, poor Eldar suffer much out here; your nightmares are not easy to work with, elf-thing." He regarded Tirr. "This one bargains. But he bargains when he holds only one card, when I have a full hand." The snotling smiled. "Very well then, we shall see if this one keeps his word. The Great One is my Master who dwells Beyond the Isle, waiting for his chance to bring to light and life the most vivid creations of any kind; that of nightmares and fears. A world painted in vibrant shades of terror and dread, horror and fright... one in which one knows what it really means to live."

The snotling's smile grew more broad. "So then, what is your nightmare?"

The room around them shook for a few moments, knocking Vilnutt's chair over, causing him to start awake. Ratchek stirred only briefly. The snotling looked up at the ceiling, his smile weakening for a moment. "Damn freak," it muttered, almost not loud enough to be heard, before smiling back up at Tirr.

Tirr sat pensively, digesting what he had heard. An entity that dwelt within the warp... Tirr was no inquisitor but he had read enough into Aethyrian scripture to know that this meant only one thing. Heresy of the highest order! Tirr could feel his discomfort multiply exponentially. Now it was time to uphold his part of the bargain. Tirr leaned forward. "I fear my description doesn't do it credit. From what you have told me you seem the creature-type to understand the intricacies of incomprehensible terror and the most private phobia-fears. If you wish to fully understand the nightmares of a deranged Lab rat you must offer me one boon for your greater understanding. I'm going to need some music. Loud and fast works best. The reason I know this is I am a skaven who has devoted his life to understanding the brain. Such a stimulus will greater enable me to regale to you my tales of mental carnage."
Much would be revealed by the snotling's actions regarding this request and may buy Tirr some time. More time the Shattered Knight moping about some odd race of elf had anyway.Request aggressive music

"Hard to work with." Lacunae wasn't sure what to make of that statement. How could a nightmare be something that could be used? Weaponised?

While the snotling seemed distracted with Tirr, Lacunae used the opportunity to take a good look at him. Hearing mention of a Master living beyond the isle (presumably meaning a warp entity), Lacunae tried to see if she could detect anything out of the ordinary.

The snotling glared up at Tirr. "Alright then, you want this the hard way, then..." He smiled through his glare, and then toddled off behind them again. Lacunae looked around, took a deep breath, and tried to extend her senses, and got the strange sensation that they stood at the edge of a great height...

A quartet of nooses dropped from the ceiling above them around the necks of all four captives. The nooses wriggled and tighetened, and the voice of Snotz floated to them from far, far away. "You want music? Maybe you can have it..."

With a hideous screech, the floor beneath them dropped away, and Lacuna and Tirr had only a moment to look down at the endless abyss of the Warp swirling below them. They were at the very bottom of Hell Pit, on a trap door to the Warp below...

And then they fell, the nooses tightening around their necks...

...and then woke up, in near darkness. Faint grey light filtered down through the trees. In the distance, a bell tolled, one that brought familiar memories back to Tirr, and one that called back ancient memories of war to Lacunae.

Nearby, Vilnutt and Ratchek groaned, both now awake. Tirr and Lacunae stood up, only to find their feet stuck in a thick muddy goo... which was rapidly pulling them down.

Nearby, something roared, and was answered with a hiss. As their eyes adjusted to the light, Lacunae could see a ruined elven tower in the distance, towering above even the swamp trees...

"Can you move?" A quick query directed at the recently revived Skaven. They were after all the reason for this predicament, and whilst losing them would be regrettable, Lacunae was not about to risk her own life for their sake.

There were many questions to be answered. (Where? Why? How?) These took a backseat to immediate self-preservation, as Lacunae attempted to find something to use to pull herself off the sinking floor.

Vilnutt and Ratchek both responded in the negative. "Our feets are stuck... we're sinking!" Vilnutt said.

Ratchek, meanwhile, had a much less measured response. "Help, help, help, I'm sinking!" he began to scream and struggle, and he sank further and further - and more and more rapidly - into the muck, until he vanished from sight.

"Poor sod," Vilnutt said. "He always hated mud. Said it was like being eaten alive."

Lacunae looked about, and found a tree limb that she could use to pry herself out of the muck - and she did, swining herself onto a patch of dried land. Vilnutt emulated her and did the same. "So, now what?" he said, looking at Tirr and the elf.

"I think it's safe to say we under-estimated the situation." Lacunae replied, surpressing a shudder as she looked at where Ratchek had stood a moment ago.

"Far from being the petty intrigue of the underhive, we appear to be caught in something far more dangerous. For now, we should seek shelter in that tower - before beasts (or worse) come after us."

Lacunae gestured for the others to follow, before realising that Tirr had not moved at all since their arrival. Lacunae wondered if she ought to poke the Skaven with a stick, or simply leave him to sink.

MK ULTRA - Skaven style

Thoughts were moving through Tirr's mind faster than he could think.

We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for base skaven nature.
The minuscule greenskin was fascinating.
How can someone not understand what music is?
What did the cultist hope to gain from briefly questioning and then killing before answers?
What a stereotypical nightmare situation they were in now.
Oh look, one of the other skaven has sunk. It's fascinating what panic can do to a mind.

With that last thought Tirr became self-aware again, in the extreme. All non-analytical thought in his consciousness was overtaken by silence. There is such a thing as cool under-pressure, but rarely ice cold. A thought from his subconscious began swimming too close to his post-oxygen starved mind, whereupon it was dragged out and choked to death by his awareness. What about the skaven that was left for dead? His mind took the corpse of this thought and mutated it into a cold efficient plan. If he saved the skaven, he would be thankful. If he recovered the body of the skaven, they had a food supply in this unknown environment and could retrieve whatever valuables he had. If he died, it would give the other two something less to worry about.
Tirr took off his labcoat and fixed one end to the branch, another to his foot paw and hoped the distance was sufficient. He then spoke his first words since awakening to the other beings present "Think about bells!". He then re-entered the mud to recover the other skaven. As an afterthought he threw his monocle ashore. What good was an eye-piece when swimming blind?

Lacunae and Vilnutt watched with a mixture of horror and awe as Tirr methodically threw off his labcoat and monocle, reminded them to look at bells, and then dove back into the quicksand, vanishing from sight.

Beneath the mud, he scrounged around for Ratchek, and found himself completely unimpeded by the muddy quicksad. He resurfaced when he ran out of air, having gone through the whole thing, and having found no trace of the poor Skaven.
