Hi Happyhare

That is a female Common Blue and you can tell this from the orange lunule markings that don't quite extend to the apex of the forewing.

:thankyou: Dave. I didn't realise that female common blues can be blue, I thought they were always brown! I've just been doing some reading up on it. :cool4:

Well this is a conundrum!!

There were some Meadow Browns flying around today and one finally landed in front of me - or so I thought.

I couldn't get a shot of it with its' wings open but now I've looked at the underwings they don't look right for Meadow Brown or is it one where something has gone wrong - there is a word for it but I can't think of it at the moment.

Any suggestions?

It is a Meadow Brown as you first thought Grayling and it has what is known as an aberration. There are many unclassified aberrations within this species which can range from forewing colouration to extra ocelli or complete lack of markings.

An interesting find.

Thank you very much Dave and thank you for reminding me of the term :thankyou:

Is it OK to use it for the Challenge or should I wait for a "proper" one?

Pleasure, Grayling

That would be great to use and if you manage to photo a standard marked Meadow Brown then you could edit your post and have both photos by way of comparison.

I have seen the Valsina form of Silver-washed Fritillary which has a bluish tinge to the forewings.

The Wall Brown you photographed Happyhare could be used on the pending list for butterfly species for the photography challenge. If nobody else manages one then we can use your image :cool2:
