Hi Carl.

I can only see a single white dot on the f/w ocelli so this should make this female Meadow Brown.

Thanks Dave :cool2:

I was curious about the large orange area on the second wings in comparison to other female Meadows/gatekeepers.

They can be quite variable with the amount of orange in both species Carl...makes it tricky sometimes but size is always a good indicator with Meadow Brown being considerably larger.

I thought this was a green veined white but the dark tips to the wings made me think maybe a Small White

I hope that I'm justifiably excited with this sighting in my garden.

Dave, is it a Dark Green Fritillary?

It looked a little bit tatty around the edges.

It certainly is Marg....great butterfly to see in any garden! One of the id pointers, without going into the complex wing markings, is to look at the abdomen and thorax around the head area...the hairs have greenish tinge to them and this is evident even in worn specimens.

Great sighting Marg.

That's brilliant Dave.

I've never seen a Fritillary before, let alone in my garden. :yay:

I didn't have time to note much Dave I only saw it for about 5/10 seconds before it flew off. At the time I was trying to get photos of a sudden burst of butterfly activity on both the Buddliea and also the Tymes that I've got up in some planters. I've never seen so many butterflies at one time in the garden for a very long time. Small and Large whites seemed to be everywhere...especially on the brassicas in the veg plot....not too keen on them laying eggs on those plants :paul: several Peacocks and Gatekeepers and a Comma.....BRILLIANT!!!
