Is this a Pearl-bordered Fritillary Dave? It was bright orange, but it's come out a lot lighter in the photo.

Wow that is gorgeous Marg and well taken.

To me it looks like Silver-washed Fritillary - Argynnis paphia

http://www.naturespot.org.uk/species/silver-washed-fritillary-0

But wait till Dave or someone else who is better at Butterflies to confirm.

Thanks Carl.

Looking through my books, and knowing that the Pearl-bordered butterfly is seen in that wood..it was on the information board at the entrance, I just assumed that was what it was. For once I wish it's wings were closed, but it stayed like that for about a minute before flying off, giving me no chance of seeing what the markings were.

Thanks for that link  That's definitely how orange it was, especially the one on the right in that link.

Hi Jen.

Looking at the colour of the forewings and the sex brand (black line on wing) i would say this was Large Skipper.

Thanks Dave. That's the first time that I've seen one of those.

I know Grayling, so I'm quite pleased about that  .....as usual, I've got quite a few points to add to my challenge, but I keep forgetting to put them up on there...thank goodness that photos are dated these days, otherwise I'd get into a right old mess. :giggle:

Can you help with the identity of this butterfly please I saw it in Surrey while out with Ame taking in the beautiful wild flowers on the downs and all the butterflies flitting over them.

I know there is not a lot to go on but that is all we saw of it.

It might be a Meadow Brown but I can't say for sure Hazel, I'm sure Dave will be along later he'll let you know

Looks like the underside of a Meadow Brown to me too - they sometimes lower the topwings down like that
