Could you help me identify this butterfly please, it only landed high up in trees or tall bushes so sorry it is not the best of photos.

i'm not expecting an ID but i thought you might like to see this poor specimen found on the ground yesterday .. in OZ . It looks familiar , we might have seen it in the past ?

Hi Jen

It does have some lovely markings on it, despite it being worn.

My guess is a Papilionidae sp but i can't trace it down to species level as yet.

i see the ones , Dave .. i've scrolled through them and found the Spicebush swallowtail ... papilo troilus . The photo i found ( below ) seems to match pretty well .... but then when i Googled the same name .. most are different :( Very difficult isn't it

It is very tricky Jen and many cannot be separated by photo alone.

The caterpillars can really help with an id as well Jen, plus many of them are spectacular looking.

that's quite a lot , Dave but i'm sure it's a good one . I'm not sure if they have a butterfly/moth ID :read: .

I might have got one last time i was there ....... we got a few books of trees , birds and plants . I'll have to ask

I find it difficult being so far away from them and Canada .. i'd love to be taking the young ones out and about :yep: We send pics and i set them a challenge , but it peters out .. it's not easy :nope:
