No problem at all Rusty.

Your caterpillar is actually that of a moth. It looks like being the green form of the larvae of the Large Yellow Underwing moth.

You can see both dark and green forms of the caterpillar on the below link, Rusty.

This is not so much an ID question as behavioural. I'm pretty certain this is a female brimstone butterfly, and when I first spotted her she was being chased by two males who were a much brighter yellow. When one of the males flew away, she fell to the ground in this posture.

Am I right in assuming this is butterfly language for, "Come and get me, big boy!"? :Eyes: The male certainly followed her down very quickly, at which point I left them in peace...

:Hi: Dave .... bad photos again but i was wondering whether you can tell me which butterfly this is .

I noticed 2 fluttering in a cherry tree at the Inverewe Gardens yesterday . At first i could only think of small tortoiseshell ... but , the wings looked larger and were flapping more than any SM i've ever seen .... and it was larger . Also you can see a dark edge and when the wings are closed , and a spot . It wasn't a red admiral or a peacock .

 Sarah.

Definitely as you suggest and it is certainly waiting for a male, or two!

Agreed with Grayling on Red Admiral, Jen.
