Maybe they reared it at a local school Jen.......it's something that's done in some schools and they tend to be smaller

Well done Jen....great find.

Could certainly be a reared one but i believe there has been a mini invasion in parts of England over the past few days, not too sure if they have reached Scotland yet but i'll have a look into it.

This has to be a Meadow Brown but I have never seen such a pale form before.

The undersides are bit pale but not to the same extent.

Hi Jan.

That is a Small White.

It's tricky but one way is to look at the tip of the wing on the underside and the black marks that are on the tip of the wing on the upperside show through on the underside in the right light, Large White has a large black chevron-like mark whilst Small White has a much smaller black mark. Green-veined White has prominent vein marks that are lacking on Small and Large White.

I'll post some photos on here to show you what i mean.

It can be tricky Jen as they don't always show the upperside clearly enough when in flight and at rest.

This is off the UK Butterflies site and is a good way of telling apart Large and Small white.

Large white on the left and Small on the right.

I could only capture this butterfly with its wings closed - quite far away from me.

Any ideas please?
