Lovely photos Paula. My book confirms what Geoff says but they look brighter in the illustrations. |

Can anyone help identify this caterpillar please. It was found in the Cevennes region of France (South France), altitude around 650m, near sweet chesnut woodland, and on a dandelion (or something of that nature). Thanks Stop press: I don't seem to be able to attach my photo. How do I do this. It is substantially bigger than the 200KB limit for attachements and when I click on 'Add image to post' I go to a screen and select my photo to attach but then it is not attached. ![]() |

Hi and a warm welcome to Nature UK. I have just tried the 'Add image to post' and it appears to be working ok, maybe try it again as there may have been a temporary glitch. |

Do you have a photo storage site elsewhere? It is fairly straightforward to link in a larger image this way. For example, I upload my images to P base and link from there. |

Yes, i can see that now. It is the larvae of the Lettuce Shark Cucullia lactucae a moth of Cuculliinae family. Found across most of Europe but absent from the UK. |

Great photo, What Is Up. And that has to be the best ever name for a Moth! |

Looks good to me for Purple Hairstreak. I'd be interested to hear Dave's view because I would have said it was a male. |

I agree with Ann and i would go with a fade male Purple Hairstreak. Hi Piratesfan. That is a moth called a Jersey Tiger. |

Thanks for the confirmation. I was thinking female because of the restricted rather faint purplish tinge; but a well worn male would certainly fit. |
