Dave'll sort that one out !
I'd say it's a Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary.

Lovely capture Judy and definitely a Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary.

Usually the best way to tell them apart is by looking at the under forewing pattern but in this case the easiest way to tell is by looking at the outer margin of the hindwing. On Sml Pearl bordered there are orange centres in the lunules whilst on Pearl bordered the lunules are all dark.

Hi, :hey:

Is this the Essex Skipper? I wondered if it has the right amount of black on the tips of its antennae. Also, is it possible to say whether it is male or female?

Certainly looks like Essex Skipper Brock as Small Skipper usually shows only orange under the tips.Female Essex Skipper usually shows dark fringes on the outer margin of the hindwing and an overall duller orange colouration, unlike the males which are a much brighter more vivid orange. The undersides on the hindwings of the female have generally a greyish-green dusting to them while males have a dull browny-orange dusting.

It looks like you specimen is a male.

Lots of these around today,i have been chasing them all over the garden trying to get a pic but they didn't stay in one place for long, so not a good photo i'm afraid.
Is it a Wall brown or maybe a Small heath ?

 Jan, it might be a Gatekeeper... but I wouldn't swear to it!

Good photo Jan considering it didnt pose nicely for you :cool1: nice to see them getting active again isnt it ... but they are very flitty and fast at the moment.

Great capture Jan :clap3:

It is a Gatekeeper and males can be smaller than females hence the size difference.
