:Hi: Nancy and I need a good :fungi1: book and wonder if anyone could recommend one. Since we live outside the UK we may have to purchase it through Amazon to get an English language edition.
Many thanks in advance.

:hello1: Chris

The below two are very good identification guides and both done through amazon as well.

I've got that first one Dave and it is good Chris......although I still struggle a bit. I've just had a look on Amizon and there's a brilliant discount at the moment, it's half price.

Dave that second one looks brilliant too, must admit I'm tempted.

Thanks for those links Dave.

Chris, I use the Michael Jordan one, but I also use four or five others as I find cross referencing between them is extremely useful.

The Eyewitness Handbook - Mushrooms by Thomas Laessoe and Gary Lincoff is a good companion to the Michael Jordan.
The others I use are a bit more technical and not got the photographic illustrations which are useful for the beginner.

I have seen that one Larry in a few book shops and never thought to look through it.

Does it have photographic images or drawn illustrations?

Theyre drawn, but very good!
Years ago my brother and I used the book to ID a fungi we found as Purple Twist (Laccaria amethystea). The book said edible so we ate it....

Dave, I have that second one you've recommended - the Michael Jordan one - I bought it quite a while ago and then decided it was too high-brow for me and it keeps going into the charity shop pile but because it has lovely photos and easy to read details (although there are no common names) it keeps returning to my book shelf - just in case. :lol2:

I've seen a lot more fungi than normal so far this year so it has been used a lot more in conjunction with the Collins Complete Guide to British Mushrooms and Toadstools which I bought in a garden centre for a lot less then in should've been.

Today I popped into town for a few errands and made my usual visit to the Oxfam Bookshop and was pleased to find a copy of this for £2.99 :yay: Fungi Book . It is a paperback but very heavy and I wouldn't class it as a Field Guide but there is lots of "chat" and random info in it, plus lots of photos - the kind of book to dip into and use in conjunction with other field guides.

Paula - most of my books come from the Charity shops  and the Oxfam one is a dedicated book and music shop and I always pop in when I'm in town.

When DS was younger and collected stamps the Manager at the time would phone me when he had new stuff in. If you tell the staff what you are interested in they'll try and let you know when something new comes in :cool1:

:hi2: the above books sound good .. i have one of the Collins Nature Guides found in Garden Centres etc Mushrooms of Britain and Europe ( Edmund Garnweidner ) and a Wildlife Trust , Concise Mushroom Guide , New Holland . Both good and portable

After a couple of Fungi Forays i decided to purchase a large ish , heavy hardback : ( Collins Fungi Guide to the mushrooms and toadstools of Britain and Ireland .. Stefan Buczacki , Chris Shields , Denys Ovenden. It's a good one but almost contains too many and is a bit confusing : ( and the Index print is a bit too small .

Now i'm finding that this is the best place to ID stuff :flower,: : )

That's great to here Jenny. Funnily enough, we were looking at that Collins Guide this week and i might look into it further as i like the idea of illustrations as opposed to photos.

Marg - that is the standard cost of a book like that in an Oxfam book shop. Novels - paperbacks - tend to be £1.99 and if a book has been donated Gift Aid they tend to be a £1 or so more.

Jen - I've seen that book in the shops so it is good to hear your feedback :cool1:

thank you all ... the illustrations are beautiful , the information is excellent .. recent changes in family .. genus , order , bibliography and glossary . But i'm no expert by any means .. a real novice .. and as i say the book is heavy with a tiny print for the index. However , i've got it now and i'll make the most of it :cool3:

I think all the photos on here are superb..........
