:greatpics: Amazing photos Marg! :encore:

He really is an unusual looking bird for this country - so exotic!

I'm surprised the smaller birds don't seem to be intimidated by the big beak - I would be :girlygiggle:

A belated thank you to everyone for the lovely comments.

By all accounts a couple of weeks ago ( the week after I went there) 2!! Spoonbills were seen, that must have been a great sight to see. They've both moved on now.

A Snipe was showing really well the last time I was at Slimbridge on the 3rd September.

It went back into hiding after I took this photo.

A very belated thanks everyone.

I've been going through my photos at last and realized that I hadn't put the photos up on here....or anywhere come to that. :giggle: of my 2nd sighting ( it was too far away for any photos at all the first time) of a Great Grey Shrike that I saw on the 29th November. I've found a new reserve in the Forest of Dean...the same place where I saw the Wild Boar back at the beginning of November, and it's turning out to be a brilliant place.

The Shrike was still a good distance away, but at least you can see it's a great Grey Shrike.

Then it flew away

Someone put a bit of a gruesome photo up on Facebook where the G G Shrike had impaled a little Blue tit onto a thorn in a Blackthorn tree, to have later. It's hard to believe that the pretty little bird is also known as "the butcher bird"

Thanks Grayling and Jen.

I didn't realize that either Jen. Julie ( daughter ) did say when I told her that I'd seen one, that it was called that, and I said you're having a laugh!! But I did a bit of research and she was right. They catch voles too, and often impale those on thorns to have later on. They have favourite Blackthorn trees that they use as their larder.

:greatpic: Marg. It is a striking bird. I have heard they are referred to as butcher birds. You wouldn't think it just be looking at it though.

 Marg .. my daughter has butcher birds in her garden .. like a magpie . The black and white one comes regularly to the back door and steals the dogs dried food :ha: Amber just opens one eye and watches . Sometimes if she thinks it's had enough she'll chase it off ... but comes back undeterred :ha:
