Lovely photos, Peppi! Some of the birds wading through the mud look less than thrilled with the experience, don't they?!

That seagull is very interesting. I wondered if it had a deformed beak which was full of something it had found? Presumably it's learned to cope with the deformity, which it must have had since it hatched. It's surprising how well animals can survive with such disadvantages.

Not to hijack your thread, and please remove this if you want to, but this is a link to an article (with photo) of a fledgling cardinal that was found in a garden in America. It was probably dependent on the parents feeding it, but the fact that it had survived as to fledging is a testament to the will to live!!

:greatpic: PeppiB. Do those kittiwakes still nest by the bridge?

Interesting link Niggit.

Yes Tabatha, they still nest on the Newcastle side of the Tyne bridge (the Gateshead side has mesh to keep them off) There are several nesting pair on the Guild Hall, adjacent to the bridge, which is where that nest is. The Guild Hall has mesh around it, but the kittiwakes have found they can weave their nests around the mesh and use it as an anchorage point!

Went to Saltholme and district (Hartlepool) today to try and see avocet amongst others but very disappointing. Last year there were a dozen breeding pairs on the saline lagoon, this year only 1 pair and they were very very distant

:wow: Lovely photos. Great close ups of the garden birds, and that lamb is adorable. Shame about the avocets. Perhaps they have found somewhere else to nest.

Beautiful photos, Peppi! I especially like the ones of the heron.

We were at Southport a few weeks ago, and there were quite a few avocets there, especially at Martin Mere. Some of them were nesting, but they didn't seem to have made much allowance for the water rising - I hope they're ok!
