Found this photo of a kittiwake I took last year in the breeding season. Can't decide whether that is its tongue or a fish it is about to regurgitate to feed its chick as it approaches its nest

Love the photo PeppiB. I have no idea whether it is a tongue or a fish, maybe someone else will know.

:thanks: for posting

Great photo PeppiB....it is indeed the birds tongue, you can tell this because it always extends to just behind the tip of the lower mandible and is always tapered. Also the colour is correct and the tongue is almost identicle in curvature in relation to the upper mandible unlike the lower mandible which is generally much straighter. This seems to be a trait of most laridae (gull) species, certainly of the ones i am familiar with although i have only seen just over half of the worlds gulls so i have a few to catch up with yet

Was at Bolam lake this morning. Not too much luck as hoards of screaming kids throwing things into the water, and dogs running everywhere barking. Had hoped to see some red squirrels, but no chance with all the noise and commotion. This fellow was being rather shy and would only feed behind the seed ball

It is a GSWoodpecker.
