We visited Pensthorpe again during our holiday in Norfolk and probably for the last time for a while:( It seems to have been re-branded as 'Pensthorpe Nature Park' instead of the Nature reserve it always has been. They seem to be focusing on building huge childrens play areas & parks and seem to have forgotten about the wildlife  & they've hiked up the entry fee to £11.50! it doesn't have so much of an appeal as it used to have (

Anyway.... A few birds from our visit

:giggle: the little moorhen's look rather cute walking along the path . They seem quite unconcerned : )

How sad that the Reserve has lost appeal now , Julie . Time will tell whether they have more visitors in the future . It's a shame we feel that by providing children with play equipment ? we encourage them to be interested in wild life :paul:

Surely the wild life has all the appeal necessary ? ... i spy charts , pond dipping , trails ..... even discussion !

Wonderful photos Julie :greatpics: I love the Canada Gosling

I don't think play areas are necessarily a good thing, when we used to take ours for days out the Eldest didn't want to look at anything just make a beeline for the play area.............we used to try and encourage her to have a look at the real attractions but for her the real attraction was the climbing equipment.

A lot of hard work for Parents if you ask me :soapbox:

Your suggestions are spot on Jen.........so much more fun and I know that most children can't get enough of pond dipping

Lovely photos Julie :clap2:

They do seem to be going along the lines of the 'theme park' now and I agree it is loosing its appeal to wildlife lovers such a shame.

thats a shame about the reserve julie, surely there are enough playparks for kids already in there correct settings. its probably a way for them to make more money!

Super photos Julie :cool2: - such big feet those little moorhens have :girlygiggle:

That is a shame about Pensthorpe, there are enough amusement places already without including them at a Reserve. We didn't like WWT Barnes when we went for similar reasons - it seemed to be the place London people took their little ones who had no interest in the wildlife and just preferred to stomp around the hides - and the parents weren't much better

Sounds like it is becoming an expensive day out too.

Great photos Julie.
I keep meaning to get to Pensthorpe, its a shame if its going to be more full of noisy playing kids than wildlife though:(

:greatpic: Julie. What a shame they have changed things. Glad we went there a couple of years ago. £11.50, that is a bit steep, don't think we will be going there next week.

Seems a bit silly as they will only get a lot of children during the school holidays, so why alienate everyone else.

:thankyou: everyone

This is a picture of the new play area, as you can see it must have cost a fortune! , money that would have been better spent on new hides, improving the ponds etc ... I agree with your suggestions Jen there is plenty of ways they can cater for children to interact with nature

As usual it's all about making money and stuff the wildlife! :( I wouldn't go there at that price especially as it would be full of shrieking kids

A super set of photos Julie :encore:

Fantastic play equipment ... but in the wrong b....y place :panic:

Does Pensthorpe really want a Wildlife Reserve now or just one big playground . Very sad :(
