Sad news about Markoo.

It was only a day or two ago that I watched something on TV about a photographer getting great images of a Cuckoo and some Water Voles but already I can't remember what programme it was on.

Breaking news....the first Cuckoo has been reported in the UK this year.

Cuckoo, Dorset, Weymouth
One flew over Lorton Lane Weymouth at 07:38 this morning.

Hopefully more will follow over the next few weeks including some of the tagged birds.

Brilliant news Dave lets hope lots more make it back here safely.

The latest update on the tagged Cuckoos,it is amazing when you look how many miles they cover in just a few days.

Latest News
Bill moves further west - 22 Mar 2017
Bill has flown 526km (327 miles) west during the last few days, leaving Togo and completely overflying Ghana. He is currently in eastern Ivory Coast, close to the Komoe River.

Victor back in Cameroon - 20 Mar 2017
Victor has begun to head west, flying 318km (198 miles) in the last two days. He is currently in central Cameroon on the banks of the Sanaga River.

Larry going for it - 20 Mar 2017
Larry really isn't hanging around. In the last ten days he has travelled 1,257 km (780 miles) from eastern Nigeria to Ghana. He is currently in western Ghana on the southern edge of the Amama Shelterbelt Forest Reserve. It will be interesting to see how long he stays here as he will now have to rest, feed-up and store fat to fuel his journey north across the Sahara.

Latest News
Selborne is the first to return to the UK! - 13 Apr 2017
A series of poor locations show that Selborne has made it back to the UK and become the first of our tagged Cuckoos to arrive back! We await good signals to confirm his location, and when these are received the map will update to show this. When his tag powered back on during the early eve of 11 April he was still in Brittany but it was only a couple of hours before he then started heading north over Normandy and the English Channel to reach the Isle of Wight in the early hours of the morning. He has only a short distance to go before he is back on his breeding grounds in the New Forest. Perhaps he will make this short trip over the Easter holidays?

PJ in Spain - 13 Apr 2017
Not to be outdone, PJ has also continued onwards, and from the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco he has traveled 650km (400 miles) to Spain. Poor quality locations indicate that he is currently south west of Seville. Once we receive further good quality locations his position will update on the map. Having just crossed the desert, PJ isn’t likely to move too far at the moment but you never know! Will he be the next Cuckoo back?

Victor in Ghana - 11 Apr 2017
Victor has continued heading west and has left Nigeria. He has travelled 495km (307 miles) to reach a location in Ghana, just west of the Digya National Park.

That'a great news Jan.

Would be brilliant if any of our members managed to see one of the tagged birds.

Jen - Selborne's arrival in this particular area of the New Forest (as per the Tracking Map) isn't far from where I live and I have visited there recently (before his arrival was published though.)

I don't know when I'll be able to get out again though, but when I do I'll listen out for him.

it'll be a good while before I'm hearing any but I don't have far to go to get my fix ....the heath land above Loch Ardinning is always a good reliable spot ;)

I wish Jen

Anyway, I've checked the Tracking Map used on the BTO website against my Ordnance Survey map on my iPad and have matched the area as closely as possible. Selborne should be in the area of Frame Heath Inclosure around the Grid Ref: SU 35169 04019.

My map of the area is below:
The crosshair indicates the Grid Ref. I mentioned.

[Larger version]

This particular location is a walk of about 2 miles, from either Pig Bush Forestry Commission car park to the northeast, or Hawkhill Forestry Commission car park to the southwest (just off the map at the bottom).

There are other areas of the Forest nearby too that I have heard cuckoos in previous years, but not necessarily being Selborne
