Well, maybe 50% success result ![]() I parked at Hawkhill Forestry Commission car park, as this was the nearest side from home for me to approach from. I entered Hawkhill Inclosure and after only about 500 yards in I could hear the call of a Cuckoo. If you look at the map below, I was following the footpath just below the lower 'speech bubble' which indicates the coordinates of the area I was in (SU 35346 02176). This is a fair way south of the reported arrival location. It may or may not have been Selborne, but I suppose there's a reasonable chance it was. I was following the call all around this area for about an hour-and-a-half. I no sooner reached the area I'd heard it, then silence. After a short break I heard the call where I'd just come from. It was almost toying with me Quite comical in a way but a bit of a disappointment. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting to catch sight of a Cuckoo. I was more surprised to hear a call so soon after I got there. I'm certain it was the same Cuckoo calling each time, but just moving around. The gaps weren't short enough in between to be two calling to each other. It went on like this all the time, but not once did I catch sight of a Cuckoo in flight. It was like trying to track down the Scarlet Pimpernel. I took a couple of photos of the area I'd heard a few of the calls, and I would like to say that Selborne was in the shot, but alas I don't really think he was ![]() Map of the area hearing Cuckoo calls. ![]() [Larger version] Two photos of the area I'd heard some of the calls. I suppose it's hard enough to track down tagged birds with the proper equipment than just trying to catch a glimpse of one by chance But I tried. |

Laurie you did well and certainly deserved a sighting after trying so hard ,it is nice to just here a Cuckoo calling and as you say not easy to track down . Maybe you will get the chance to go again and try again for a photo. |

The latest update -Larry and PJ have now made it back. Latest News Larry makes south coast - 02 May 2017 From Spain, Larry has traveled around 905 km (565 miles) to arrive on the south coast of England by the afternoon of 1 May. He is currently located between Sidmouth and Exmouth near the Sawmill Reservoir, Yettington. He still has around 350km (220 miles) to go to reach his breeding grounds at the Forest of Bowland,Lancashire. He is the third of our tagged Cuckoos to return to the UK this year. PJ returns to UK - 02 May 2017 PJ has returned back to his breeding area, transmitting from Suffolk on 29 April. He covered the 495 km (305 miles) from his previous location in France during the late evening of 27 into 28 April. Since he arrived he has been moving around the Thetford and Mildenhall area, close to Kings Forest where he was tagged. He is the second of our tagged Cuckoos to make it back this year. Victor continues north - 02 May 2017 Victor has flown a further 290km (180 miles) north within France and is now in the La Brenne Regional Nature Park, east of Poitiers. The park covers 166,000 hectares and is dotted with over 2,000 lakes and ponds. Hopefully this is a good area for him to feed and rest in but we might expect him to continue his journey any time soon. |

Latest News Larry and Victor have arrived back but Peckham seems to be lagging behind a bit. Peckham moves north - 09 May 2017 Signals on May 7 show that Peckham had embarked on his desert crossing and was in the Sahara desert. When the tag switched off he hadn't yet completed the crossing. However, signals received in the last few hours show he has successfully reached Spain and completed his desert crossing. The map should update shortly to show him in the Sierra Morena Mountains. Larry back on breeding grounds - 09 May 2017 Recent signals from Larry's tag show that he left the south coast and continued north to arrive back on his breeding grounds in the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire by May 7. Victor returns - 09 May 2017 By 3 May, Victor was in northern France, close to Rouen. Just a couple of days later and a further 350 km (220 miles) and he was back in the UK, at his breeding grounds on the Norfolk/Suffolk border by 5 May. He is the fourth of our tagged Cuckoos to arrive this spring |

I've just had a catch up on here, thanks for the updates Jan. ![]() Laurie that's a shame that you didn't get to see a cuckoo, but at least you heard one, better luck next time. ![]() I've managed to both hear and see two cuckoos at Coombe Hill last Sunday, but they aren't tagged. I dare say you know this Laurie, but just in case. I was given a very good tip from Les Waring, a brilliant bird watcher that I've got to know over the last few years. I told him that I'd just missed seeing a cuckoo up close when I was at Coombe Hill, a couple of years ago now, and he said if you can, be patient and wait because it'll be back, and he's right, they seem to have their favourite trees to go in and call, especially trees and with dead branches up high. Mind you standing back in a hedge for a long time can be a bit of a pain. |

Peckham has made it back safely now Peckham back in the UK - 23 May 2017 Locations received from Peckham's tag on 21 May showed that he was back in the UK and that he was close to the Gloucestershire/Herefordshire border, between Aston Ingham and Little Gorsley. However, we received a series of poor locations on 22 May that showed he was on his way back to the Yorkshire Dales, and when we next hear from his tag we expect him to be back at his tagging location near Sedbergh. Latest News Victor still on the Norfolk/Suffolk border - 23 May 2017 Victor is still ranging quite widely around King's Forest in Suffolk but also occasionally visiting Thetford Forest over the border in Norfolk. Like PJ he has also been in the vicinity of the BTO's Nunnery Lakes. The most recent locations received around lunch on 23 May showed that he was to the east of Thetford on the edge of heathland close to Roudham. Selborne still in the New Forest - 23 May 2017 Since arriving back in the New Forest Selborne has explored it pretty thoroughly. The most recent locations recieved from his tag show that he is now spending most of his time in an area northeast of Brockenhurst and to the northwest of Furzey Lodge. He has also visited heath to the southwest of Beaulieu Road Station. PJ still close to his tagging site - 23 May 2017 Since arriving back in the King's Forest on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, PJ has ranged quite widely in the area and has visited the BTO's Nunnery Lakes on a few occasions. For the last few days he has been frequenting the area just north of the Elveden Memorial. https://www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies/cuckoo-tracking |
