The Cuckoos are all well on their way back to Africa now and there is a new one to follow,Kidman who was tagged in the New Forest on May 30th https://www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies/cuckoo-tracking/kidman and updates on 2 of the others ..... Latest News Victor in North Africa - 17 Jul 2017 A series of locations received from Victor's tag on the evening of 16 July showed that he had left central Spain and was in North Africa, in northwest Algeria, on the northern edge of the Sahara. PJ crossing the Sahara - 17 Jul 2017 At 19:23 on Friday 14 July we received a location from PJ's tag that showed he was close to the coast of southern France to the west of Toulon. At 20:45 he was 46km (28 miles) to the south of here and over the sea. The last location we received before his tag powered down was at 01:41 on 15 July and he was about half-way through his crossing of the Mediterranean. We next heard from him at 16.14 on 16 July when he was in the middle of the Sahara in southern Algeria. He didn't stop here, and by 08:53 on 17 July he was in Niger and around 500km (350 miles) short of successfully completing his desert crossing. Between Friday evening and early on Monday morning, he travelled 2,900km (1,800 miles) at an average speed of 47kph (30mph). Fingers crossed, when we next hear from his tag he will have completed his desert crossing. PJ on the move - 13 Jul 2017 PJ has moved south within France and is now now on the border with France and Switzerland, north-west of Geneva and south of Lake Geneva itself. He is currently moving around an area of woodland to the south of Loisin. He is 65km (40 miles) northwest of where the French, Swiss and Italian borders meet in the Alps. |

The news isn't what we would expect on 2 of the Cuckoos... Larry really is in Poland! - 01 Aug 2017 We've seen several of our birds back track to previous stopover sites when conditions haven't been perfect for onward travel, but Larry has undertaken a journey from Italy northwards to Poland, a country in which he hasn't transmitted from since we've been tracking him. In fact none of our Cuckoos, since the project began in 2011, have ever sent signals from Poland. This is much further northeast within Europe than normal and almost puts him on the same latitude as Peckham who is still in the UK! We think this is in response to the very hot conditions in the Mediterranean region and is an escape flight rather than a return to last stopover site. We're surprised to have seen him travel so far north. Tracking these Cuckoos still continues to throw new light upon their migration https://www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies/cuckoo-tracking |

Very interesting Jan and migration still turns up the occasional oddity although this is unprecedented as far as a migrating Cuckoo is concerned. Great news Laurie. |

Good news on Selborne,Laurie, lets hope we see him return safely in the spring next year. Latest News Peckham leaves the UK - 15 Aug 2017 Peckham has left the UK and headed 290km (180 miles) to Belgium. This is his second attempt to leave, the first of which was thwarted by heavy rain. In previous years his first transmission outside of the UK have come from Switzerland and The Netherlands. He is currently moving around the area between Lummen and Diest. Having spent longer than usual in the UK we may see him move on quite speedily. Victor in Nigeria - 15 Aug 2017 By the 11 August Victor had moved 345km (214 miles) southeast to northern Ghana before continuing on a further 630km (390 miles) east to Nigeria over the next couple of days. The last signals show him to the south east of the Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River, formed by the Kainji Dam. Mr Conkers crosses the desert! - 15 Aug 2017 A transmission on the morning of the 14 August revealed that Mr Conkers had left Morocco and sucessfully crossed the desert. He covered 1660km (1030 miles) south to reach the Ferlo Nord Wildlife Reserve in Senegal. He has taken a more westerly route than any of the other Cuckoos this year. Good to see Peckham is on his way at last. https://www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies/cuckoo-tracking |

Its hard to believe that the cuckoos are already starting their journeys back, nice to know though. Latest News Victor begins his journey home - 06 Feb 2018 Since the end of November Victor has been in south-eastern Gabon but signals received yesterday showed that he has now left his wintering location! He has travelled 380km (235 miles) and is now in the Republic of Congo in the north of the Odzala-Kokoua National Park. It's great to see him start his journey home. Cuckoos on the move north - 02 Feb 2018 Two more Cuckoos have begun their journeys northwards from their wintering locations. From Angola, Larry has flown 675km (420 miles) north east to Central Congo. He is now to the north-east of Okoyo. This is similar to what he has done in the previous two years, before moving into Cameroon and then on to west Africa. In the first year he then made his desert crossing from Nigeria, but in the second year that we tracked him he went much further west - crossing the desert from Guinea! What will he do this year? Selborne has also headed north and is now in northern Gabon, close to the coast, and the Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muniborder, a Wetland of International Importance. He is just south of the border with Equatorial Guinea, and has travelled 350km (218 miles) from his previous location. PJ moves onto Cameroon - 24 Jan 2018 New signals on the afternoon of 22 January show that PJ was continuing northwards and had made it 800km (just under 500 miles) north from Gabon to reach Cameroon. He is just north of the Mbam et Djerem National Park. https://www.bto.org/science/migration/tracking-studies/cuckoo-tracking |

Thank you for that latest update Jan ![]() I'll be keeping an eye on 'Selborne' to see if he returns to his breeding ground in the New Forest again this year. Last year I heard him calling in the Hawkhill Inclosure area between Brockenhurst and Beaulieu, so nice and handy for me to get to and maybe get a sighting this time. Or the very least to hear him. So far I've never had a visual of him ![]() |
