Latest News
Whortle in Niger - 13 Sep 2013
From his position close to the border, Whortle had crossed over from Mali in to Niger by 9 September and covered 250km (155 miles) in a south-easterly direction. From here he then travelled north-east 100km (65 miles). He is currently in the Tillaberi region of Niger.

Chance on shores of Lake Chad - 11 Sep 2013
By the early hours of 10 September Chance had travelled the final 70km (45 miles) or so and was on the shores of Lake Chad. About 80km (50 miles) separate him and fellow Scottish-tagged Cuckoo, Patch, who is on the other side of the lake.

Chance gets closer to lake - 9 Sep 2013
Chance has travelled a further 96km (59 miles) in a south-easterly direction, still heading towards Lake Chad but he has a little more distance to cover before reaching it. He is currently very close to his location on August 15 last year, where shortly after crossing the desert he turned eastwards and made straight for Lake Chad, spending a few weeks in and around the nearby area.

It doesn't sound very hopeful for Sussex at the moment, 2 weeks with no signal.

Thanks for the updated link Jan.

The latest update shows that some of the tagged cuckoos are on their way back to the UK.

Latest News
Waller moves to West Africa - 28 Feb 2014
Waller has become the first of our tagged Cuckoos to move to West Africa! The last signal placing him in Cameroon was received on 20 February and by the 27 February he had travelled a huge 1445km (900 miles), flying over Nigeria, Benin and Togo to reach Ghana. The latest signals reveal he is in eastern Ghana, 85km (52 miles) north of the northern edge of Lake Volta.

This is the first return migration that we have followed for Scottish Cuckoo Waller but it's interesting to note that last year the first Cuckoo to move west was Chance, another of our Scottish Cuckoos. He also spent a few weeks in Cameroon before moving to Lake Volta in Ghana around the 25 February - very similar timing to Waller! This timing does raise fresh concern that something has happened to either Chance, or his tag, as we have not received signals since 4 December and, given his timings last year, he should be on the move.

BB moves north to Cameroon - 27 Feb 2014
Sometime between the early hours of 24 February and lunchtime on the 26 February, BB made another move north, leaving Gabon behind. During that time he covered 390km (240 miles) to reach the Mbam et Djerem National Park in central Cameroon. From the satellite images you can see he is now out of the thick cover of the Congo rainforest and in the edge of some forest, where the tree coverage thins out.

Derek is most southerly Cuckoo - 25 Feb 2014
Derek has travelled a small distance south-east from his last position. The most recent signal, received on 21 February, shows he is currently near a tributary of the Congo river, close to Site Lac Tele-Likouala Aux Herbes. Now that Chris has moved north, Derek is the most southerly Cuckoo. Will he also move north shortly?

thank you for that update , Jan ..... such interesting reading Posted Image
I'm not always keen on the tagging ... too much handling .... but i'm very intrigued by the info obtained so it has to be worthwhile . I look forward to future events/movements :cool3:

A super idea for a present .. i looked up for a child to sponsor one . I must have a better read because it's not easy to understand how the children would follow the cuckoos progress :paul: and the books .. one only for a very young child , the others for adults ?

The latest update on the tagged Cuckoos...

Latest News
Derek continues west - 17 Mar 2014
Derek has continued 350km (218 miles) on from his last location and is now in the north-west of Ivory Coast, very close to it's border with Guinea. As for two of his fellow Norfolk Cuckoos, Ken, has also made it to Ivory Coast, while Chris has recently arrived in Ghana.

Chris is in Ghana - 17 Mar 2014
By the early hours of 14 March, Chris had left Central African Republic and signals showed he was in the south of Nigeria. The next signals received on 16 March revealed he had continued on and was in Ghana. He had travelled a total of 1900km (1180 miles) from his location within Central African Republic to Ghana in no more than five days at most! In previous years he has arrived in Ghana between the 13-17 March, so once again he is on schedule!

Derek in Ivory Coast - 11 Mar 2014
From his last position to the west of Lake Volta, Derek continued a further 445km (275 miles) in a north-westerly direction, across the border and in to Ivory Coast. He is now just north of Bouaké (or Bwake), the second largest city in Ivory Coast. Waller is a further 400km (250 miles) to the south-west.

:hello1: Jen you are right an incredible journey for them,Waller seems to be doing well but there is some doubt about Chance but it could be a flat battery stopping transmission so hopefully when he is in the sunlight again the battery will be charged but at the moment he is 'missing' so :fingers:
