Would you believe that two reports of Cuckoo sightings came through to the BTO recently but the photos confirmed that they were actually Collared Doves...how on earth do you mix up Collared Doves and Cuckoos??!!!

Dudley at Lake Volta - 4 Mar 2015
Dudley has been busy and covered hundreds of miles in the last few days. His last location was in Congo on 19 February but on the 3 March he was 1020km (640 miles) further north-west, and within the border of Nigeria. Over the duration of 3 March he continued moving westwards, travelling 950km (590 miles) to Lake Volta in Ghana by the afternoon of 4 March. He is the third of our tagged Cuckoos to move into West Africa.

Chester and Dudley still within rainforest - 27 Feb 2015
Chester and Dudley are the only two Cuckoos, from who we are receiving regular transmissions, who are currently within the Congo rainforest. We expect them to move north to the forest edge shortly as other Cuckoos have done.

Chris and Livingstone on northern edge of forest - 27 Feb 2015
In the last few days Chris has moved to the northern edge of the rainforest, having left his location in Congo and travelled 630km (390 miles). He has flown across the entire breadth of the forest spanning Congo and Central African Republic, at which point it is slightly narrower than to either the east and west.

He is now in Central African Republic where Emsworthy, Livingstone and David are currently. Livingstone has also only moved to this area recently, travelling 590km (370 miles) north-east from Gabon. We now have five Cuckoos on the edge of the forest getting ready for the next stage of their migration to West Africa, where two of our Cuckoos already are.

Chris moves west at last - 31 Mar 2015
Chris is on the move! A good quality signal on 31 March placed Chris just inside the border of Ghana, showing that Chris had made his move west, albeit later than in previous years. Since the last transmission received on 21 March he has covered 1700km (1060 miles). We are glad to see he is once again on his way. This will be the fourth return journey over which we will have followed him - we wish him a safe return!

David in Sierra Leone - 27 Mar 2015
On the evening of 26 March a transmission received from David showed that he was on the move again and had travelled 650km (400 miles) further west. He is now in Sierra Leone, close to the border with Guinea.

In both previous years he has also set off on his desert crossing from Sierra Leone but in both cases he arrived there in the first week of April. In 2013 he started his desert crossing on 15 April and headed to Mauritania while in 2014 he left on the 17 April but went slightly further west still, to Senegal, and then on to Morocco.

Given his earlier movement this year, could he be the first Cuckoo to turn north and head home?

No further signals from Fred - 25 Mar 2015
Since receiving one transmission from Fred's tag on 5 March, nothing further has been received which details his location and he has once again dropped off the map, which shows only active Cuckoos within the last 10 days by default. We presume that, if all is ok, Fred would by now have moved to West Africa. We will have to wait to see where he is when further transmissions are received.

We have a great chance of seeing Cuckoos when we go to Norfolk in a few weeks Jan and Julie, hopefully Kelling Heath will attract a few of them.
