Thank you for that Tim. I've copied these notes down so that I can rush to the window and spot the difference but of course I'll need my camera. Wish the bird would come my way again. Such a treat. The Reed Bunting I noticed is very similar to the sparrow. Are they related?

Helena: You can thank Dave for the ID tips Helena as he posted them for me. Good luck with getting some nice photos to help. Reed Bunting, especially the females, are quite similar to Sparrows but are different families. Buntings are from the Emberiza family and Sparrows from the Passer family, so not really related. I have found that learning the scientific names of as many bird species as I can does help with separating species and family groups. Julie: Thank you. |

We are lucky enough to have the only breeding population of Whinchat south of a line from Hull to Bristol on Salisbury Plain. We did a survey of them today and saw 8 Whinchat, as well as Stonechat and several Wheatear. This one sat long enough for a distant photo but I hope to get a bit nearer on future surveys.![]() Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) by timtapley, on Flickr |
