I think you always remember where and when you see a 'lifer' Tim and it is such a thrill to do so. I remember my first Whinchat at Derby Bridge in the Peak District and had two other lifers at the time in Merlin and Ring ouzel.

Sometimes i wish i could go back and start again because i have seen nearly every species on the BTO list and only a handful of mega rarities have eluded me to date. I am determined to see these and especially Lanceolated Warbler, a species i have dipped on 3 times now!

Beautiful, beautiful photos, Tim. Do you have a very powerful zoom lens, or is it a case of taking lots of time and trouble getting close enough to take such a good shot?

Also, I'm intrigued to know what your spaniel has in his mouth in your avatar picture - it looks like a rock!

Thank you Niggit. I use a 100-400mm lens for most wildlife stuff which isn't what I would really like to have but as much as I can afford. In good light I can use an extender but birds have a habit of skulking in the shade which doesn't help much. I do try to use a bit of field craft to get as close as possible but doing so without frightening the subject away isn't easy. I have just bought a small pop-up hide which I hope will improve my chances a bit.

Yes it is a rock. Bonnie lived for swimming, rocks and sticks and was rarely seen without one or the other. She loved the chalky rocks around where we live and took great pleasure in chewing them to dust. When she finally left us last year she didn't have much in the way of teeth! I still find it hard to not pick ap a stick or rock to throw for her when I am out walking.

Thank you Dave. I think it is quite a young one from the plumage. It stayed in the same place for quite a while so I wonder if it is staying close to it's nest site?

Thank you Jan. We do have a lot of nice bird habitat around us although I have a lot to add to my life list yet!

Thankyou for that, Tim.

Sorry about Bonnie. They certainly do leave pawprints on your heart, don't they? We had an old boy who used to love us to throw pebbles for him on the beach, but he wouldn't pick them up - he'd just go and point with his muzzle to where they landed, then wait for you to throw the next one!
