More stunning shots Tim.Am really envious of the water rail shots as have only seen water rail chicks at the edge of reeds, never an adult.

Thank you hh. The white wagtail is the European version of the pied wagtail. This picture was taken in France where they are the dominant variety. They are both Motacilla alba but the white wagtail is alba alba whilst the pied is alba yarrellii. The white wagtail, as the name suggests,is lighter in color and far more wite around the face.

It is weird how these variations occur. When we were in Sweden the Long Tailed Tots all had completely white heads and the Nuthatches were almost white on the chest rather than our rather tan ones, and yet they are the same species.

Many Wagtails can cause similar confusion such as the varying races/ssp of Yellow wagtail. Channel, Grey-headed, Blue-headed etc etc.

An interesting link.

Wood Pigeons (Columba palumbus) aren't necessarily appreciated as much as I feel they should be. They are very colourful birds and quite charming to watch in my opinion. I was watching one meticulously selecting twigs for it's nest today and choosing or discarding them with some considerable thought process it seemed.
