A male Garganey (Anas querquedula) deserves so much more than to be photographed like this on a muddy bank. One to be improved on but my only reasonable one to date.

Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) taken in the Kruger in 2005. Seems like an eternity ago!

Again a bit indulgent with 3 images but let's face it, the male Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) thoroughly deserves it!
This first one was taken some time ago when my photography and equipment was a bit iffy but the expression on the female's faceat the displaying antics of the male always makes me laugh (and wish I had been better at taking photos then). I hope I get another opportunity to take this record of behaviour.

These taken this year show the male in a somewhat more dignified pose.

Thanks happyhare. The Fudge Duck was taken in Lydiard Park in early April 2011.

Goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis) seem such an easy bird to get a good photo of, but I have to say I have had some difficulty getting a satisfactory shot away from a feeder.

Here's a record shot of one on a seed feeder which shows good colour and detail but not my uotimate aim as a nature photograph:

These are crops of hots taken from some distance but in a more natural environment, which I personally prefer. Not sharp, detailed photos but i quite like the artistic quality and feel to them:

This year my aim is to get something that captures both qualities.

Great Black Backed Gull (Larus marinus). The most pelagic of all the British gulls and the only one that could genuinely be described as a seagull.
These images show it as a graceful aviator but also as a fearsome predator.
The squeamish may want to skip the last two photos. Experts may like to help me identify the unfortunate victim.

Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus) make lovely subjects, especially when in breeding plumage or with their sfripey chicks.

Brilliant shots Tim :clap3:

Great sequence of GBB Gull shots.

The prey bird has me a little puzzled, the bill i thought at first looked a little like a Petrel sp but other id pointers cannot be seen from those images. I am very intrigued as to what sp it is...would you mind if i submitted the photo to an ornithologist i know?

Great photos Tim :encore: love the grebe chick :aww:

The "victim" does look a bit like a storm petrel Dave  It'll be interesting to know what it is

Not at all Dave. I am intrigued to know what it is too. When I photographed this action I thought it had a fish or crab. It wasn't until I got it on the laptop and cropped in that I even realised it was a bird.

Thanks Paula.
