Well here is something we weren't expecting to see on what is probably the coldest day here so far this winter - down at Blashford - an Adder!!!!!!

It was a sunny day but very cold and it was on a mossy bank facing the sun. We reported it to the Warden who was quite surprised too so will be sending him a photo and details for their records.

That could turn out to be one of the latest sightings of an Adder anywhere in the UK Grayling.

Buds on our honeysuckle and osier willow tree have formed over the past day or so and much earlier than last year.

I've seen honeysuckle in leaf on a few of our recent walks.

Just saw this large bumblebee on our patio window. Sorry, the photos aren't great - I had to get down on my knees :OAP: It's 3.9 degrees out and it was very active.

I love the adder photo, Grayling! I saw a bumblebee yesterday, but it was too far away for me to see any detail. Andy

Great capture and find Grayling.

It looks like it could well be a queen Bombus terrestris and they are usually the first bee species to appear in the new year. It is still early to be seeing one and they normally appear from early Feb onwards.

Thanks Andy, Dave and Julie

Andy, I've noticed a Bumblebee regularly visiting the Mahonia in my garden for most of the Winter but it isn't in an easily accessible position for a photo.

Dave, thank you for that ID :cool3:

I sent an e-mail with the photo of the Adder to Blashford but they've not sent a reply of any kind

A great sighting Grayling and it shows it is good to have some winter flowering shrubs in the garden .

I hope you get a reply from Blashford soon.

Excellent! I've not been there for years, but it's a lovely area! I grew up in Gosport and used to fish the Avon around Ringwood and Ibsley. Andy
