Never heard that before Laurie. They are like hoovers for the forest floor.

It's pitch back here by nine now.

:cool1: Laurie . I like your little write up of what's going on in the Forest at this time of year .

In the Devon woodlands near to our cottage there were old part low walls which would have had a corrugated roof in the past . It was where the pigs were always kept ... food readily available at this time of year

Dramatic isn't it , the change from a month ago when it was light from 0300 til 23.00

so jealous of your locale , Laurie :impatient: I may have Foxes every night but I also have sirens and light pollution and wandering (staggering ) passers by to contend with :angry1:

There is so much going on in the Forest, not just autumn but throughout the year, I could almost write a book about it ;)

Jen - so glad you like my Forest ramblings.

John - we used to live in an urban environment before we moved here so I know exactly what you mean. We feel so privileged to be able to live in the countryside surrounded by such beautiful scenery and tranquillity. Experiencing nature we never did before is fantastic.

I'm just waiting for the colour changes of the leaves on the trees now. The weather conditions have to be just right to get the spectacular autumnal colours, and the Forestry Commission are hopeful that we're going to get those conditions this year.

I've already got my locations picked out to set up my camera when the time comes. I'm passing these locations every day so I can keep a close check on them ;)

By the way Jen - under pressure from K I have decided to take the Autumn 2016 Spotting Challenge and have posted my first entry (the Adder). When I told her I was undecided to go for it I heard phrases like Party Pooper and Wet Blanket, so I manned up and went for it :giggle:

I needed to put the central heating on tonight for the first time, if that isn't a first sign of autumn what is?

Yay :circles: I'm glad you're joining us on the Autumn Challenge, Laurie.

Eric, I haven't given in to the central heating yet but it was the first night for ages that I haven't had the windows open.

I noticed the Birches locally have started to yellow, some just seem a bit less green than others, but a few are distinctly yellow now. The red Rowan in my garden is heavily laden with berries which are very red, but the Elders haven't started to turn yet.

I'll be going to pick up my husband from work just after 9 and it will be very dark, the first time I've picked him up in the dark since last spring. The last time he did 9pm finishes it was still light and that was only 3 or 4 weeks ago.

A lovely photo Dave.

I agree the nights are getting darker very quickly especially on a dull day.

Not a great shot as it was tricky to get to and i had to use the flash but it shows Cuckoo Pint starting to appear in hedgerows.

I saw a whole load of Cuckoo Pint berries somewhere and then blowed if I could remember where, when I needed them for the spotting challenge.
