I heard an item on the radio this morning about beavers on the River Otter in Devon and whether they will be allowed to stay.

Just read they will be alllowed to stay provided they are free of disease and if so, Natural England has decided to award the Devon Wildlife Trust a five-year licence to manage the animals, on a trial basis.

I can't find the thread about our Beavers on the River Otter .. Ottery St Mary ... East Devon

They have a reprieve so long as they are virus free :wow:

a 5 year trial will now go ahead says Natural England :encore: DEFRA ( G.. help us ) will be responsible for testing and monitoring . DWT will be running it and need to raise half a million pounds :scream:

There might be some culling needed at some time if there are no predators

The decision could mean a release of other varieties :cool1:

I think that is the key Jen, monitor the species to see what impact they have on the river system and environment in general and then assess things from there...very good news though.

The only thing that DEFRA have stipulated as a threat from these beavers is not viral, but tapeworm - in this day & age it would seem that humans, who carry so many diseases harmful to their own kind, would be more of a threat to the beavers via our contamination of the waterways. Jean & Graham

Very good point indeed Jean. One example of this is from the IWA (Inland Waterways Association) Milton Keynes branch, that cleaned up over 12 tonnes or rubbish from certain stretches of local waterways....unbelievable!

:thanks: Dave ... just a short while to wait now for the results .. fingers crossed .

How wonderful that so much care is being given to them at the moment . The idea was to carry out the test and to receive the results as quickly as possible . Great that they've been filmed for Springwatch :encore:

great news , Grayling ... it was on the local news a short while ago . Footage of the surgeon and staff doing a bit of keyhole surgery to investigate and photograph various organs . Martin Hughes-Games was there for Springwatch

Very exciting as they'd just had the all clear from TB .. :Woo:
