In readiness for the eclipse on the 20th March, I bought some astro solar filter paper stuff (equivalent to around ND16) to try and get some nice shots of it. One sheet, £30 :) I've got it sandwiched between two pieces of card with a whole cut in them that's the same size as my hood and then a curved bit of card to act as a sort of 'cup' for it to all sit nicely on the end of the lens.

Tried a really quick and nasty test this morning. ISO100, F8, 1/320th
Quite pleased with that! The black blob in the middle is a sunspot

ND = neutral density, so it's like putting sunglasses on the camera.

I've got an ND10 filter that is virtually solid black. You can see almost nothing through it. The filter I've got for the sun is half as dark again! And I'm only taking the photo for 1/320th of a second, so you can see just how bright the sun is and how much you have to step it down to grab enough light for a picture without it being over exposed.

The special paper looks a bit like tin foil and I can't see anything through it at all so I was amazed to put it on the camera and actually see a picture on the live view on the back.

You might get a similar result with sunglasses in front of a camera lens but BE CAREFUL!! Don't look through the view finder at the sun, always use live view on the rear screen.

To give you a sense of scale, the spot left of centre is 2-3x the side of the earth!!
