Yesterday me and Mr G went down to Thursley Common/Bog for a wander and we were lucky to see a Great Grey Shrike, infact I think there were more than one.

They are regular visitors to Thursley, so much so that there is an area known as Shrike Hill. We saw one a few years ago but on that occasion I'd forgotten to check my camera batteries, not made that mistake again

Anyway here are a few snaps - it was too far away for anything decent with my lens but I think you can make out the details enough to see that it is a GGS.

We heard something calling that we didn't recognise and then saw the bird in the first two pictures - it then flew off towards the trees in the background.

We then spotted another one on the other side of the boardwalk high up in a tree - here are selection

I'll be going back this week to see if I can get some better shots :fingerscrossed:

Great photos! What a find!
I went chasing one last year, when they were reported on Cannock Chase!

Brilliant sighting and great photos Grayling :clap3:

It really is s superb bird to observe and good luck when you try for photos again. This bird normally hangs around for a bit so you may get a couple more opportunities :cool2:

Many thanks for sharing those with us.

Great photo's Grayling, our Shrike is still there we heard, but it has only been giving very distance views the last couple of days, not worth getting soaked for. Excellent photo's Grayling

Oooh, well done on getting those photos Grayling :clap3:

That's a bird I would love to see. We occasionally get them at one of the local reservoirs but they always turn up on a weekday and are gone again by the weekend ... typical!!

Thank you all for your lovely comments :thankyou:

I walk at Thursley at least once a week if I can but you know what'll happen don't you, I'll go all geared up to see one and they'll be nowhere to be seen :cwl:

Hope you all have better luck at seeing one this year too :fingerscrossed: I had a look on the local birding site and it looks like someone else spotted one the same day so they must be just starting to arrive.

Pleasure Grayling.

What i am going to do is set up a winter bird sightings thread whereby i will put on the species and location so that members may have a chance of seeing certain birds.

Thanks RW :flower:

I went back for a quick walk yesterday morning - didn't see anything but I met a charming gentleman who walks the common everyday and records all his sighting and he was most informative.

He was interested in my sighting especially as we had heard it calling which is apparently quite unusual but was probably a territorial warning call from one to the other.

So I now know where "Shrike Hill" is - the gentleman had seen one there that morning but by that time I had to get home so will make a visit there next time and keep my :fingerscrossed:
