had a visit to riverside today to see if the whitethroat was still there. found them in same spot but would they come out to pose? nope. got one half decent pic and that was it. saw a lovely blue tit fledgling though. and a dunnock sunning itself but was very quiet there today. maybe the birds were watching the football? lol.

after an early start we boated out to an island in the reed beds and began clearing a path with the assistance of a watcher on the other side of river guiding us via walkie talkie. it was hard work when you were in front, which i was at the first nest and after awhile we were told we were in the general vicinity. i managed to find the first nest which was so exciting. the first nest had 3 chick's and the second nest had two. all were too young to ring though as were just a bit too small. they will go back next weekend and ring them now a path has been cleared to the nests.
here are some photos of them, hope you enjoy them as much as i enjoyed being there. it certainly was a privelage and i hope i get invited back to other outings.

blimey ! :thud: one proud handler .... fantastic opportunity , Mick :jealous:

Are they not worried about you being there ? it's very lucky that the parents aren't concerned too much .

Look at their huge wrinkled legs and feet/claws . and big mouth :giggle: Wonderful :cool1:

jenny they tried to peck when trying to lift from the nest, understandably but once in your hands and held firmly they settled down, they allowed me to stroke under there chin etc, was amazing. never saw one parent at first nest, at the second the male arrived after awhile circling and giving out alarm calls but wasnt agitated. the guy guiding us saw food passes after we left and the female going into the nest.
the group have been ringing them for years there so are well experienced.
paula, yes thats me holding them, i never thought i would be allowed to but i was the one that found the nest so had one thrust into my hands quickly :)
i will never forget this day thats for sure :)

Cheers Julie and tabatha. It was amazing holding and stroking them. I really hope i do get back tabatha, I've been told I will be given a shout when they are netting bearded tits for ringing at the reed bed's, that will be something also.
