I had a run out to Gelt Woods this afternoon and I took my crappy camera and never got a pic of the Bee-eaters but I did see them and was thrilled to do so Around 30 people there and met a couple who had come up from Matlock (Dave & Anne) and we got talking they had all the gear (as did all of the serious twitchers) and the sun shone and it was a lovely day. anyway Dave & Anne let me look through their telescope thing which was trained on the nest hole and 3 times I saw the birds go in and out, I was made up The following pics are from the site but like I say I was not successful, I did see them through my binoculars but they are so fast I could hardly keep up with them. The RSPB had a table up there and the car park charge was £5 and not £2 as I was led to believe The RSPB said that the 2 pairs had bred and had probably got lost coming this far north far away from their usual summer residence. ![]() the following 3 attempts were me trying to snap the birds flying, without success, the rest of the pics are of the local area. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The plant near the centre in the foreground is some thistle like thing |

Good to see some photos of the area Ian. They can be tricky to photo and you best bet is to capture them on telegraph/phone lines, one of their favoured perches. |

The RSPB were charging for parking and yes it is a huge working quarry. Link from Border TV http://www.itv.com/news/border/2015-08-03/rare-bee-eater-birds-spotted-in-cumbria/ |

Thanks for the link Ian. I have been on a number of twitches whereby the bird in question has been located in someone's back garden (Dusky Warbler in Cornwall and Dark-eyed Junco in Chester) and the owners of the property were charging a minimal entry fee to view the bird with all proceeds going to the RSPB, i have a feeling that the Dark-eyed Junco (mega rarity from North America and parts of Central America) raised over £2000. |
