Numbers of puffins breeding in a large puffin colony on Fair Isle has halved, from 20,000 to 10,000.

I was reading this on Twitter last night John and it makes my blood boil...they know that culling is not as effective as vaccination and it is costing the earth to do so, why on earth don't they heed the advice of all the scientific evidence out before them.

One interesting point mentioned by someone on Twitter last night was the fact that the Isle Of Man is rife with Bovine TB but it doesn't have any badgers resident on the island which would possibly point more to this being an issue with other carriers of BTB or that the farmers don't have clean, sanitised working practices in place....basically it's quite obvious that not all cases of BTB can be levelled at our humble badger and it is just a scapegoat to make the government look like they are seen to be doing something, and protecting their constituency votes in those rural areas where dairy and meat farms are predominant.

Vaccinations have to be the way to go and it has been proven to work in a number of trial areas such as Wales for example...it does work, it's cost effective and it doesn't impact in such a cruel and unnecessary way on our badgers....so why in the heck are they continuing to roll out culls!!!!????

sorry for the late reply ,Dave . I think you're right to be upset  in my opinion it's a "stealth" way of keeping the "blood sport " agenda on -going . keep it looking like killing animals is normal practice ,whether it's to help the farming community by culling "pests" or as just another "traditional " country pass-time :rolleys:
I've still to see a live Badger and it's a treat I'd hope more people could look forward to ....this won't help :nope:

I agree John and many excuses have been made over the years to carry out such practices and even more so recently regarding culls. Public opinions have also been swayed by over zealous and downright gutter journalism, whipping up support for carrying out culls based on unsubstantiated evidence. What sort of society have we become when there has been a call for culling gull species based on ridiculous stories that they could kill babies!!! and only yesterday i saw a story in the Plymouth Herald where a woman had been 'attacked' by a 'horde' of moths where she had claimed that she had feared for her life!! what on earth is going on???? come on people...get a damn grip!

That would be out of this world Grayling! the largest living animal on the planet and i could not imagine what that would be like to see in the wild.

Many thanks for the link and if one came 249.9 miles closer i would walk all the way to see that off our coast!
