So I was right to question my initial thoughts. Now I have been on a name change quest! Appears as Macrolepiota in my book and I also found it as Lepiota.

Thanks for the help. But what about this one. From the same day and the edge of a wood. Growing on what appeared to be a felled old oak branch.

I was wondering about Hymenochaeta rubiginosa ?

Could be Geoff. I come unstuck on these at times so i may have to ask my friend Nick to take a look.

I know what you mean about the difficulty of identifying these tricky varieties which start off looking like an encrusting form then the edge rolls over to become a bracket type.

It would certainly be interesting to find out more information.

I'll pass it on to Nick and hopefully get a response over the weekend.

I can't get any further with your second one Alan, it is likely to be a Fibrecap of some kind but would need photos of the gills and stem, with possibly a spore print and even then, it is highly likely that the spores would have to be looked at under a microscope.
