I thought how lovely this little fungi looked so had a look on google and it seems it's a member of the ink cap family and known as the japanese umbrella or the fairy parasol (just as you said Di!) :fairy:

Lovely photos Dave.
There are so many types of fungi aren't there, it's a fascinating subject and whilst I was in town the other day, I went into a bookshop and found a very good book that I'm going to get off Amazon (cheaper that way) it's by Roger Phillips and is called Mushrooms. The photos in it were really clear and seemed a very easy book to use.

Not 100% sure Dave, but it looks like Coriolus Versicolour which is quite a common species throughout the year in deciduous and coniferous woodland.
(just looked it up! - don't know too much about fungi)

:wow: i like that one dave, it does look like the family of the ones peppiB has looked up, there are some pics on google, really interesting ones in that family, we shall have to have a mushroom and fungi emoticon if there is such a thing :giggle:
