Never seen this fungus before. It's huge and I wondered whether it's Chicken of the Woods

I will have a go Andy but i fear it will be difficult to even get it into a genus. The last one however is a type of Polypore. |

Hi Carl I think that is a type of Cladonia lichen. Cladonia humilis is one that looks similar but i am in no way 100% sure about that. This is a pretty good site to trawl through. http://www.britishlichens.co.uk/index.html |

Depends on the length of the stems (Podeta) but I would say from what I can see by zooming in that the most likely is C. fimbriata C. humilis the Podetia are only 5mm tall and the cup is much more funnel shaped. C. Humilis is found on soil. C. fimbriata prefers rotting wood. Hope that helps Carl ![]() |

I have enjoyed reading this thread today. I took many fungi photos last year - but not much this year yet. One yellow wax cap and some bracket fungi, probably yellow stereum. This photo gallery is quite helpful to point in the right direction for ID. http://www.amanita-photolibrary.co.uk/photo_library/BI_fungi/index.htm |

A very good link Amethyst and a lovely photo ![]() I can't wait for the fungi season to start and we absolutely love looking for fungi, photographing them and then trying to id them afterwards. Do you have any fungi guides Amethyst? We tend to use these two and find them very useful. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mushrooms-Roger-Phillips/dp/0330442376/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343772540&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Encyclopedia-Fungi-Britain-Europe/dp/0711223793/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343772614&sr=1-2-fkmr2 |

I am a keen fungi photographer too. Would never dream of picking and eating any though - so its not a big deal if I'm not always 100% accurate on my ID's The only mushrooms on my plate come in a box from the supermarket!! I usually do ID's on the internet - although take the results with a pinch of salt knowing how reliable it can be. I will bear those two books in mind that you recommend, and maybe drop a hint or two to Santa I have got one pocket sized guide - but haven't had chance to put it in action yet as only got it in March. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Nature-Guide-Mushrooms-Toadstools/dp/0002199947/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1343849494&sr=8-2 Here's my alleged yellow wax cap pictures. North downs - chalk flower meadow 8th July 2012 (whilst missing the men's Wimbledon final! ). |
