Been for a walk down a farm track near home today and found the following 2 fungi and wondered what they might be.

The second one was on the edge of a field which had maize in it last summer and has not yet been worked this year, the hedge near by was all blackthorn. The first one at the moment escapes me as to where exactly I saw it and if I get the chance today I will take another walk and see if I can find it and take a picture of the surrounding area.

Many thanks Hazel. It might hold the key to which species they are. I'll keep looking in the meantime.

This is the farm track I walked down which was where the fungi were next to in the grass at the side, you can just see them in the photo.

There is then a ditch which was empty of water just full of dumped tree branches and things. On the other side of the ditch there are 2 trees both different kinds. I used to be good at knowing all the tree barks when I was a youngster but have not used the knowledge for so long I am not sure what they are. My best guess would be one is a beech and the other an ash but the fungi are growing along in front of both the trees.

Is this Dryad's Saddle? I saw it yesterday on a dead trunk, possibly beech in mixed woodland, silver birch etc.

Hi Jan.

Was the compost a bit 'woody' looking? sometimes compost can have wood substrate/bark in, and it would confirm what i think the fungi is.

Dave it is old compost from last year and has stood outside all winter ,I can't remember what I had growing in that planter other than the weeds that are there now.
