Harmful foraging? So long as there’s cash in harvesting wild fungi they face being stripped away, so they need protecting. http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/sep/23/plantwatch-simons-wild-mushroom-foraging-fungi-harm-new-forest |

It does annoy me when people pick all the fungi ...I never get to see the lovely varieties and I think it's because it's all been stripped bare by mid morning

I agree Paula. Not only are they picked for commercial value but fungi forays are now so popular that this will also cause issues. There is no need to pick quite as many as they do and it would be far better to take spore prints, gill photos and small samples to determine what species they are. |

You'd think that the restaurateurs and others who collect the fungi would be more responsible I don't know what can be done about them when fungi are low on most peoples priorities Wasn't there a regulation

Paula Foraging is one thing but over-picking is irresponsible. It's the same with the Roman Snails at Ranmore where I walk - they are protected but you still get people who collect them to eat/sell. I suppose that is the problem, if there is a market for wild stuff people will collect it to sell on. Thanks for the link Dave. |

Paula. Thanks for that link Dave. When I was up on May Hill last weekend, I couldn't understand why I couldn't see any big Parasol mushrooms up there because there's usually a lot of them dotted about all over the hill. As I was walking around I saw two women in the distance with two very large orange plastic bags, and they had just cut one very big Parasol mushroom and were placing it in their already bulging bag. I eventually made my way over there and the women had gone, and I couldn't see one!! Parasol left. Totally greedy selfish people, to take the odd one yes that's perfectly OK, but so irresponsible to strip them all out, they obviously don't give a dam if they wipe them out entirely. Something has to be done, but how it could be carried out I've no idea.
