A couple of days back a little bird turned up in a garden in Hoogwoud in The Netherlands. They didn't know what it was and a question to its ID on Facebook lead to a frenzy of birders queuing around the block wanting to see what has been called the Holy grail for Dutch birders Siberian Rubythroat - Calliope calliope.
The owners of the house had a nice little earner out of this, allowing a few people in the house at a time for 5 Euros each for about a 30 second glance before they ushered out and more spectators took the place.

The link is in Dutch sorry but if you scroll down a bit you will see the piccies showing the people and the star of the show the Siberian Rubythroat.

That species is usually top of the birdwatchers list of 'want to see' birds....a spectacular Siberian mega rarity and a great find for all those Dutch birders, Shirley.

I managed to see one in Dorset in 1997 and thousands of twitchers turned up for that one, i think it was calculated that 10,000 birders had turned up to see it! it was absolutely manic and i had never seen anything like it.

Many thanks for sharing that with us.

I think there have only been just over a dozen records in the British Isles, Helen, and 11 of them have been seen on Shetland with two others i know of in Dorset and Co.Durham, an incredibly rare bird indeed but it does prove that they do turn up on our shores, albeit very rarely.

Thank you all for your comments

Dave, its not too far at all probably less than an hour by car but I am not really a running round the country for a bird and having a rare bird alert app. If I see some thing rare then I am happy.

Its funny last year I saw two very rare birds by accident - just in the right place at the right time.
You may have a thread about this somewhere as it happend in England and members may have seen the bird -
We always take a trip when t RSPB Leighton Moss when we were over in England on holiday. It was packed because the day before an American pied grebe had turned up. i managed to get a piccie in a very crowded hide of a bird I didn't know existed - pure luck!

The second was here in Holland up the coast in Petten, we were driving home from a a day out looking for fungi and there was a row of biders all line up on the road - I got hubby to pull over and asked what the excitement was and it was a sharp tailed sand piper - another I had neve heard of and to be honest if i wasn't told this little wader was something special I would never have known

When Wild about the world forum was a going concern we had a member Chris Butterworth from the Wirral and when there was a rare owl sighted in Holland he came over for that day to see it - now in the words of Roy Castle - thats dedication!

That really is dedication! I have done similar in the past Shirley, albeit in the UK, and travelled from Anglesey to Hampshire then back up to Norfolk...all for two birds!

You have managed to see a couple of cracking birds there, seen them both in the UK before but only on one occasion each.
