It might well be a Bucks term, Eric because I've heard people call them Ring Doves. It may also be because we have Ring-necked Parakeets though and people are just mixing their birds up.

Scrap the above suggestions, I've just done a google search and apparently there is a Ring-necked Dove (Streptopelia capicola) and a Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto).

This morning the Magpie frightened the little birds away

The Wood Pigeon was unconcerned at the top of the pole.
