This autumn promises to be a tense one as the foodie craze has forced national park authorities to ban all foraging of fungi.

Interesting article,my opinion is why bother to pick them when they are cheap to buy and none of the associated risks ( had a mild bout of food poisoning last Sept due to eating a cep that wasn't :groan: )

My sentiments exactly , Andy :cool2:

Thanks for that interesting article , Dave .. a brilliant ban and they can't say they weren't warned :yep: Now the expensive restaurants will have to start growing their own :)

Spooky that this article appeared not long after I posted the one about the mushroom ban in the New Forest.

Let's hope they get the message and any who still dare to flout these laws are found and severely punished (and this includes the restaurants who buy from theses foragers.)

It would be nice to think they'd be caught and punished , Laurie ..... but rather like the poisoned eagles , goshawks , red kites and others ............. the culprits will get a rap on the knuckles and told to go home :waiting:

I hardly ever see fungi in my area as the basket brigade have all been there at the crack of Dawn and picked it all....it makes me so angry :notfair:

I really hope they get something going around here :yep:

Thanks for the link Dave

Great comments everyone.

I have been on a fungi foray before but never once saw the need to pick them in such a high frequency, no need for it at all.

Paula, I had to smile at the "Basket Brigade" - I've seen the "Big Black Bin Bag Brigade" at Witley Common which is NT property and no foraging is allowed. I don't think I've ever read of anyone being prosecuted for foraging mushrooms?

It is the same with the Roman Snails at Ranmore Common which are actively foraged despite signs up saying not to.

Maybe some kind of revision/amendment to the Wildlife & Countryside act of 1983 needs to be looked at in regards to fungi and the protection of.

That is a very interesting read, Dave. Why is it that there are so many people with absolutely no respect for the countryside. It is a similar mentality that leaves all the garbage behind and expects other people to pick it up.
