I heard this on the radio this morning - More than a quarter of UK birds face extinction risk or steep decline. Particular concern is for the Curlew There is particular concern among conservationists for the curlew, Europe’s largest wader, which has seen a population decline of 64% from 1970 to 2014 in the UK, largely due to habitat loss. The UK supports up to 27% of the global curlew population, and due to its “near threatened” global status, a research plan has been created to help understand the causes of the species’ decline. That's very worrying news...some successes with the Golden Eagle and Cirl Bunting but unless there are changes to farming and some work done to create and maintain proper habitats we're going to lose a lot That'll be a very sad day...Thanks Grayling

Very worrying report, especially regarding the status of the Curlew, never ever thought for one minute that this once common breeding bird would even get anywhere near to this list. Thanks for the link Grayling. |
