Tawny Owlet Concept (what do you think?)

I had the good fortune to bump into this little fella yesterday. Unfortunately he was on the edge of a woodland ride frequented by dog walkers. After taking a couple of images I retreated a safe distance as one of the adults was in attendance. Normally I would have left as I am well aware that these owls fledge onto low branches and the ground. However, on this occasion I wasn't happy he would survive long.

With this in mind I knew that there was normally a Wildlife trust work party in the wood on Wednesday so having found them they agreed that it wasn't wise to leave him where he was. They got some expert advice from one of the local bird ringers who advised them to lift him into a rough barked tree as far as they could reach. Luckily he was under an old apple tree which was ideal.

This enabled me to get another set of images before we left him in peace with his parent.

I really like this image, at first I was disappointed the light had not fallen across his eyes but I like the fact the sun has nicely highlighted the killing tools he will use as an adult.

What do you think?

It's a fantastic image, whether or not there was much light on his eyes. I'll bet you don't often get opportunities like that, Scott. I know I'd be over the moon.

A beautiful image Scott, I like the shaded eyes and talons illuminated. What an experience and I think you behaved absolutely correctly. I hope the little chap survives.

I think it is a tremendous image Scott, and primarily based on the fact that you don't see the eyes and that you see the talons, a combination of elements that is usually reversed. It almost gives the feel of a sleepy owl about to wake up to undertake it's crepuscular activities, although that statement would read truer if it were a Little owl as Tawnies are more nocturnal in that way.

I like the lighting and it suits certain owl species to maybe just be captured with that little shroud of darkness behind them, adds to the feeling that they are, after all, creatures of the night.

Thank you all for your comments. I suppose its also a lessen in not deleting images until you have let them stew for a while as this one has really grown on me.

To be honest I have been looking for these for years but never seen one. Luck certainly was with me on Wednesday. For a start I had expected the weather to be better so had set my camera up the night before, however, when I got into the woodland it was obvious I needed more light. I had literally stopped to adjust my settings when I heard a "clacking" down at my feet, presumably this is the sound they make to attract the adults to feed them. And there he was looking up at me, no doubt if I hadn't stopped I would have walked right past!

 i think you're right about the clacking , Scott ....... there's a link for the Tawny owl trail cam on the Simon King website on the Forum . The chicks are large now and the mum can hardly get into the nest box .. the owlets make the clacking sound

Thanks for your kind comments. Hopefully not too long to wait for another decent image, although I have just bought a new memory card so that has probably cursed me for a few days! :gaah:
