LED Mod

Grizz--Is it just a matter of desolding the old and soldering the new? Is there a particularly size of replacement LED that is recommended? Appreciate it if you elaborate on the steps/tools needed to accomplish this mod. Thanks!
Yeah it's just a straight up replacement of the existing LED. If you're skilled at desoldering the whole thing is a snap as long as you have a bit to open up the N64. If you don't then I strongly suggesting ordering one as it also works on the SNES and GameCube.

My original intention was to replace the stock red LED with a blue one but Radio Shack didn't have blue on hand so I went with amber instead.

Mostly I just did this project because I have so many extra N64's laying around that I wanted one of them to be a bit more unique.

New N64 Collector
Howdy and welcome to one of the coolest places on the Net.

By the way, what genre of games are you most interested in? I ask because the N64 is strong in platformers and First-Person-Shooters but it also has an amazingly deep fighting game in its library by the name of Killer Instinct Gold.

LED Mod
What's funny is that my friend Jonathan though that the amber light was an error message like the yellow light of death on a PS3.

LED Mod
One of the easiest mods to perform on an N64 is to change the color of the LED. Here's a picture of one of my N64's in which I swapped out the harsh red LED to a much mellower amber one.

I brought this N64 over to my friends work today (he works in a computer repair shop) and we played a few rounds of Killer Instinct Gold via a dongle he has that allows composite cables to be converted to USB. Surprisingly the picture quality was pretty good but he has a really nice graphics card in his PC, too.

Watcha Listenin' To?
Today I decided to listen to this song while thinking about a certain person who's hold up in the Ecuadorian embassy. ;)

My N64 collection
Wow, I just noticed, you have the grey Turok Rage Wars cartridge! You've got an excellent collection and very nicely displayed.

May I ask, what's your favorite N64 game?

My N64 collection
Welcome home Nintendo Twizer.

I'm proud to say...
Congrats! Post up some pictures if you get a chance.

Star Wars Episode One Racer Controller
Wow, I just found out that there was an arcade version of SWE1:R!

I can't really say that I am a collector although I must admit I am very tempted to start collecting controllers. :eh:
Watching this video will push you over the edge. ;)

weird things in your collection
This might be the weirdest thing in my collection.

Watcha Listenin' To?
Keep it secret, keep it safe. ;)

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead...

Why do you smile
Like you have told a secret
Now you're telling lies
Cause you're the one to keep it
But no one keeps a secret
No one keeps a secret
Why when we do our darkest deeds
Do we tell?
They burn in our brains
Become a living hell
Cause everyone tells
Everyone tells...

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead...

Look into my eyes
Now you're getting sleepy
Are you hypnotized
By secrets that you're keeping?
I know what you're keeping
I know what you're keeping

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead...

[spoken]
Alison?
Yes, Katherine.
I have something I want to tell you, but
you have to promise to never tell anyone.
I promise
Do you swear on your life?
I swear on my life

[end spoken]

You swore you'd never tell...
You swore you'd never tell...

You swore you'd never tell...
You swore you'd never tell...

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
Cause two can keep a secret
If one of the m is dead...
(chorus x 3)

Yes two can keep a secret
If one of us is.... Dead.

RUMBLE PAK MOD

Aug 15 2012, 08:39 PM
UPDATE: The "no-bat" pak works GREAT now after two adjustments. I soldered the resistor to the wire installed yesterday and placed PACKING PEANUTS where the batteries would go (to absorb misdirected vibrations). I actualy think the latter was the more critic step.
Current would bypass the resistor so the packing peanuts probably made the bigger difference. I'll have to give that a try myself.

The Rumble Pak mod is really worthwhile as it lessens the weight of the unit which in my humble opinion is/was its greatest shortcoming.

I'd like to see a picture of what the N64 looks like on this TV. Please take a photo and share it with us when you get a chance.

Generally speaking the N64 tends to look better on plasmas than on LCD TV so I'm thinking you're going to be happy with the image on your set.

Help with gameshark v2.1
Gamesharks are very well known for being temperamental.

Also, not all games will be supported by version 2.1 so you may have to eventually get a version 3.2 which, if memory serves, supports the most N64 titles.
