We've all heard it said that playing some records backwards can reveal hidden "usually Satanist" messages, but has anyone ever actually played a record backwards and heard any real words?

Aparently, this is called backmasking, though I didn't know that until, in a fit of boredom, I went looking on Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

and clicked a few links at almost random. Anyway, there is a page about it at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backmasking

but has anyone here ever tried it?

Oh, and Jasper Carrott (a brilliant stand up comedian) says he once tried playing a heavy metal record backwards once, to see if there was a Satanic message there. And aparently it said "Your stylus is knackered...your stylus is knackered...Your stylus is knackered..."

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven reversed

Played forward:

"If theres a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen. Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run; theres still time to change the road your on."

Played reverse:

"Oh heres to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan. He'll give you, give you 666. There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad Satan."

And it isn't just that site. A while back I played Stairway to Heaven backwards, and sure enough it was the same thing.

If you play Bon Jovi records backwards they're actually less annoying. Still rubbish, though.

Endure and survive...
i certainly think it is real. i have checked a lot of stuff out myself to please my curiosity. some of the reported examples are extremely hard to make out, others are EXTREMELY easy to hear.

another super obvious one, along with the led zeppelin on already mentioned, is acdc's dirty deads. i still have the file i reversed and saved.

forward "pick up the phone, leave her alone. it's time you made a stand"
reversed "yeah i am the nazi! OOOHH i love it. who the #$%^ are you?"

there are some good sites that have a lot of sound clip examples.

i recently heard that ozzy actually recited in reverse during a concert "satan is lord" 3 times. ofcourse that wasn't as odd as the rest of them, as it didn't sound like anything while said in reverse, where as true examples do.

I bet you have Bon Jovi posters in your room. And I bet he's your hero. And I bet you think he has lovely skin, too...

Nope. But the earlier stuff is less soul-destroying than the later power ballads/cheesy rock tat.

If you play Britney Spears' song "...Baby One More Time", it (very roughly) says at one point "Sleep with me, I'm not too young."

I've seen and heard slightly different backward lyrics for that segment of stairway to Heaven backwards:

"So here's to my sweet satan. The OTHER ONE'S little path, would make me sad, whose power is FAITH. He will give you 666. There was a little tool shed where he made us suffer, sad satan."

I've seen it the other way too. Personally I find this one a little creepier for its scriptural reference. "Wide is the path to destruction but narrow is the path which leads to salvation and few are those who find it."

a 'little path'.

There is an extended lyrics floating out there too that shows what they should "supposedly" be throughout the entire song backwards. I don't remember all of it but in does make an odd amount of sense. It begins with a call to listen to what has to be said. I also remember "he stirs my sins in the river." Which...we've begun interjecting into every Led Zepplin song here. XD

Edit: If I can find it, I'm going to post a picture my artist friend Ryan made for me when we discovered this. Its me forced to watch Jersey Shore in a tool shed while Satan is mowing the grass and crying.

"There was a little tool shed, where he made us suffer, sad satan."
