I don't know if it's true, or if it's just an urban myth, but aparently in the film Blade Runner, at the end, Decker (the main character, played by Harrison Ford) finds out that he is a replicant too, with artifical memories and stuff, and was aparently created to test whether a replicant would make a good Blade Runner or not. Aparently, he finds out the truth, so he goes on the run from his creators, and takes Rachael with him. According to the rumour, it was decided that the American people wouldn't like to find out that the hero was in fact not human, and so the ending was altered to it's present state, where Decker's human status is never doubted. I've also heard that the full version of the film, with the non-human ending, is only available in Japan, but that might be wrong. Anyway, I can't say if it's true or not, but for a vaguely comparable situation look at the 1996 American Doctor Who film with Paul McGann, where it's "revealed" that the Doctor is half-human. Well, we wouldn't want to portray an alien as being morally superior to us human, now, would we? Incidentally, most true Doctor Who fans (myself included) utterly reject the half-human Doctor nonsense. Incidentally, has anyone ever read the book Blade Runner is (loosely) based on, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, by Philip K. Dick? It's almost totally different from the film, and (to my mind) not very good at all. |
