Did Perfect Dark Zero kill off the franchise?

Perfect Dark Zero has been out for a while now and there haven't been any announcements of a new PD in the works. It would be a real shame if the franchise was finished for good. :-/

There was a pretty big gap between PD and PDZ so I wouldn't call the series dead. No series dies. People used to think Metroid was dead!

There may be another sequel, but I can't see it being released for a very long time. Despite being hated by the overwhelming majority of fans of the original game, PDZ still sold relatively well.

Get N or get out!
I would love to see a new Perfect Dark game(knowing Rare, it will be arriving during the next gen though. haha).

IMO PDZ was a good FPS, and I still enjoy the multiplayer, It still can't hold a candle to the original game though. B)

Gotta agree with CreamSoda, Perfect Dark Zero was actually quite a good FPS. Most of the whining and belittling of the game came from either die-hard fans of the original who thought the game didn't live up to their expectations (admittedly, I can partly understand this being a fan of the original game) and the rest were the same ****ing Nintendo fanboys that have whined about everything Rare has done since they parted company with Nintendo. I really wish they'd now shut the **** up.

PDZ isn't by any means a perfect game (pun intended? >_< ) but many people forget that the original wasn't a perfect game either. Poor framerate, crap boss, a poor second half to the single player missions - these are all complaints about the original game, as seen on the "The worst of... Perfect Dark" topic. PDZ has it's own "faults", but most of these are (according to the forums) things that haven't been implemented from the original game!

If there was a competition to see which had more impact then the original game wins by a mile; it was revolutionary. PDZ wasn't revolutionary, but that alone doesn't make it a bad game. And as it was a million seller, it's quite likely that we'll see another Perfect Dark... probably sometime between 2010 to 2012! ;)

One thing that has to be taken into consideration is that Rare aren't exactly EA Games. It usually takes a long time for a small development company to release a game (with the exception of the Nintendo 64 days, though they were a second party developer back then). For now let's just hope that Banjo Kazooie 3 is as good as the original games. ^_^

You're quite right to bring that up. I think PDZ would have had deeper gameplay and better implemented ideas if it hadn't been pushed for the 360's launch. I imagine Rare was a very busy studio in the run up the the 360 launch, since they had both Kameo and PDZ to finish.

Didn't they also lose a lot of employees shortly before the buyout?

They sure did. The large majority of the team that worked on GoldenEye and Perfect Dark left the company and formed Free Radical Design.

^ They left long before Microsoft were being considered as potential partners. In fact, the people who set up Free Radical (most notably David Doak of "Dr Doak" fame) left half way through Perfect Dark's development, sometime in 1999. That's why the original Timesplitters game could come out in October 2000, only five months after Perfect Dark had.
